Generation of links from the address line

In my old IE5, I used to be able to take a web address and turn it into a
link by typing the following into the address line:

about:<a href="---URL---"> CLICK </a>

With IE6, though, I don't seem to be having much luck Am I missing
something?

Drag the little icon from the left onto the desktop?

Or have I misunderstood something here?
