Generating custom queries in Active Directory

Can anyone assist (or pass me onto)a way of generating
detailed queries within Active Directory ?

We had a number of 'pre-canned' reports when we were using
NETIQ's Enterprise Administrator for our NT4 domain. We
have since migrated to AD (mixed mode), and I need a cost
effective (yes cheap) way of doing this.
