Allan was not hallucinating. The general tab is also
missing from the internet options screen on my version of
windows xp home. The tab was not always missing but one
day it did magically disappear.

When the tab disappeared my home page was also changed. I
was able to change the home page back to google but only
by using their website to do so.

Since changing it back it has not changed again,
unfortunately I do not remember what the website that
changed it intitially was.

Parasite Alert! Quoted from a previous post.

First I would recommend you download yourself a copy of the free Ad-Aware
6.0
from Lavasoft (http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/) and also SpyBot
(http://security.kolla.de/) and scan your system for and remove any unwanted
parasites, adware, spyware, foistware and any other junk that might be
hiding
on your PC. This needs to be done in addition to your normal anti virus
scan
using your preferred anti virus application. The reason being that the loss
of the General tab in Internet Option is often the result of having
installed
a homepage hijacker/parasite and the parasite doesn't want you restoring
your
homepage to your preference.

The JS/Fortnight.b@M can also remove access to these options although more
normally it only removes access to the Advanced and Security tabs.
See http://us.mcafee.com/virusInfo/default.asp?id=description&virus_k=100025
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/js.fortnight.b.html

Now go to Kelly's Korner and download the small file iegentabs.reg
(http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/regs_edits/iegentabs.reg). Right click and
merge with your registry and this should remove the restrictions that have
been put in place by some malicious web site to prevent you accessing the
General tab in Internet Option.
