I hope this is in the right place. I recently had to do a complete
reinstall of an old XP Pro machine. It was hosting a USB laster printer
that was shared with everyone on my LAN (XP Home, XP Pro & Vista).
Previously, when anyone wanted to 'attach' to the printer, all they had
to do was use the wizard and 'search for network printers' and it would
show up.
Now, after rebuilding the machine to XP Pro SP3, I find that even though
I have shared the printer with "Everyone", anyone who wishes to attach
to the printer needs to enter a username and password to even SEE it.
And, this is the really strange part, if they go to Network Places, find
a shared folder on the "printer" computer and try to access it, they
have to enter a username and password THERE also. Previously, they did
not have to.
Did SP3 mess with the General Policies, or do I need to change something
there? I frankly cannot remember if I did anything to the old system as
it was originally installed about 5 or 6 years ago.
Any thoughts?
