General question about firmware

I think I understand that firmware updates for an optical drive are stored
in the device's ROM.

If you have to reinstall XP at any time, will the firmware update be lost?
In other words, is there any connection between the Windows OS and the ROM
inside the device?
I need to know if things like firmware and BIOS updates on a reinstall of XP
will be kept or will the reinstall wipe out the BIOS and firmware updates?
Many thanks
Dudley Henriques

No, firmware and BIOS setting will not be changed during the actual install.
Optical drive firmware will never be changed by Windows, your BIOS settings
may be (uncommon) slightly modified.

<nitpick>
XP can techincally change the firmware of DVDs, as that is where the
Region settings are stored. You get 5 changes.

You are correct in that the install process won't change any of the
firmware.
