This may be the wrong group for this question, since my only connection is that
I am
running Windows 2000. I'm wondering how secure these online shopping sites
really are. After ordering some vitamins from a reputable company with apparent

security installed (warning messages about entering secure area), and giving
them
my credit card number, I got an email from what was supposedly pay pal asking me

to contact them. Their web site was slightly different from Pay Pal found by
googling, and their main page appearence was also different. I sent Pay Pal the
total
message with headers to get their opinion. I'm just wondering how soffisticated
the
web pirates are when it comes to detecting a credit card transaction. I can't
believe
it was a coincidence that I received this email from Pay Pal just after placing
this order. I never used Pay Pal for any services, and almost never get
promotional
material from them. I also plan to call the vender tomorow to get their
feedback.

Just curious and a bit concerned,

Sherwin D.

Unless the message apparently from PayPal specifically mentioned the
merchant by name, then yes, it's a coincidence. An astonishing number of
these phony messages purporting to come from PayPal are sent out,
sometimes to addresses that are simply made up. I have one email address
that gets several in a typical day. Unless the email address is one that
is known only to you and the company, you can't make any assumptions about
how the sender got it.

By the way, the whole world now knows about "(e-mail address removed)." I
hope it's not one you use for real correspondence.
