general folder Icon customization

Downloaded a whole whack of very cool icons, but when I
went into control panel>folder options>file types>file
folder>advanced and changed icon, it didn't change the
icon of all the regular folders...is there a special way
to do this? and also, how do I go about changing icons
for mypictures, etc?
Thanx

You probably need to refresh your icon cache. If you have TweakUI, you can use 'repair icons'. If
not just go into display properties -> appearance -> advanced -> select 'icon' and change the size
up or down by 1. Apply the change and then go back and reset to your original size.

Another way to change the general folder icon, as well as the open folder icon, is Kelly's script:
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm
line 119, right-hand column.

This modifies the registry here:
"HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Icons"

To modify the icon for other shell components, add a value to this key from the list found here:

http://www.google.com/groups?hl=en&[email protected]&rnum=7

For special folders which do not have a CLSID (My Pics, My Music, etc.), you need to edit the
desktop.ini file within that folder. Your explorer view options need to be set to 'Show Hidden
Files' AND uncheck 'Hide protected OS files' for this file to be visible. Open it in notepad and
change these two lines:

IconFile= <path to your icon file>
IconIndex=0

If you find customized desktop icons are reverting to their default icons, see my post here:

Good Luck,
Keith
