Found, but not used myself:

I have been using the Personal Ancestral File software previously
referred to for 3 years with no complaints. One pointer - you have to
register with an email address to download it. Be sure to use a
disposable one or you will be spammed.

Go to the LDS site Family Search http://www.familysearch.org and download
Personal Ancestral File. I have been using this for several years and have
found it to be more than adequate for genealogical purposes. It is free.

I volunteer at a family history center and NO ONE that I know has ever been
spammed after downloading PAF, and I have worked with dozens of people on
genealogy. I have downloaded it myself on more than one occasion when I
needed a copy for someone or to install on a different computer and have
never received any email from the Mormon Church.

PAF is a good, basic program but has some limitations. The free version of
Legacy has a few extra features not found in PAF, but also has some things
disabled that you would need to pay to activate. I would try both, enter
some data, see which UI you like the best, and see it there are any "must
have" features that point you towards one or the other.

You might want to see what the folks over at the
soc.genealogy.computing newsgroup have to say about the various
genealogy programs.

I use Brothers Keeper
is very good - many possibilities, but simple for starters
and it's free...
