Does anyone know whether older versions of Legacy (e.g. 3.0) or
Personal Ancestral File (4.0) are available anywhere for download? I
need a genealogy freeware program that will run on an older computer
and the new versions require a lot of HD space.
Also, if anyone knows of any other freeware genealogy programs that
require less than 10mb HD space and run without Internet Explorer,
please let me know....

This is what I know being sort of interested in this. PAF, at least that's
what I think it's called is freeware; it's fairly simple to use but I have
no idea how small it is. I currently use Legacy 4.0, and I paid for it. They
have 2 versions, the one with all the bells and whisles you pay for, the
other is free, or at least it was. I believe 4.0 came out a year to year-1/2
ago and I paid for the upgrade. Legacy is kind of overkill, even 3.0 was big
I think, but it does what I need and even though I don't use all the
functions, I paid for it to get them. ;)

Those are the only 2 'free' programs I know of and you'll have to google for
the PAF site (it means Personal Ancestral File, I think).

Others may have better ideas. Also, wouldn't hurt to google for 'freeware
genealogy' or some such phrase.

Enjoy.

Shoot, I forgot to answer your question about Legacy. I don't think 3.0 is
available on the site. You might email them and see. also try searching
under legacy.zip or legacy30.zip; just do a google search, sometimes it pays
off.

Oh maybe PAF isn't free, here's the link:

Thanks for your reply...I already did the google search before I posted
but couldn't find Legacy 3.0 (only the new version is available at the
site). The PAF link was not working (maybe because it's no longer
freeware?). Thanks again...

The latest version of PAF is still freeware and it's a pretty good
application. It's at the Latter Day Saints site. Google to PAF and you'll
find them. Like all of them, it's big being a Windows application. They all
do about anything you could possible want to do with a genealogy database,
including generating some terrific reports. I just downloaded PAF to take a
look and it's okay but behind Legacy or Family Tree Maker for ease of use
and features. I own both and use Legacy 4.0 exclusively. My database has
22,000+ individuals and so I need and use a lot of the features.

If you're going to use a computer with a very small hard drive and minimum
RAM I'd suggest going to the genealogy newsgroups and asking if anyone has
an old version of PAF on floppys. It maintained your records and ran well on
any machine but was JUST a rudamentary database. I just checked my
"archives" to see if I still had the floppies but, Sorry, no. My suggestion
is, given the prices of computers right now, re-think using that old
machine. Heck, my friend Judy just bought a HP desktop with a 2.2 Celeron,
40 GB hard drive, 256 MB ram, a CD-burner, etc., etc., for $300 (after
rebates-no monitor).

Just a thought and MHO.

Good luck, Dan

Just looked and it now looks like just the limited version is free and for
all I know, it may be crippled. Sorry, maybe I spoke too soon.

I think that GeneWeb is what you need...
Very light, complete, freeware, multi-platform.
