geforce4 mx440 SE video card on XP

Janzy

Before I did a clean install and went from 98SE to XP my
video card worked fine. However since I have XP now a
problem has developed. My computer has what I call
blinking eyes. The screen goes black and then comes on
and goes black again and comes on. It does this many
times during the day. I have a pentium111 with 450 mhz
processor with 640 Ram. I have tried so many things to
try to correct this problem. New drivers for monitor and
video card. Looked at the bios etc. Tired of the whole
thing. Only thing I have not done is to buy a new card.
Do not know if XP likes this card or if it is something
else or what. If anyone can help I would appreciate it.
The only thing I have not done is to reformat. Not my
favorite thing at all. I will tell you that I got worm
blaster in the beginnng of my installation and had to
download the patch. Someone told me that the patch does
not cure all the damage. So help if you can. Otherwise
my only hope is to start again. Thank you. Janzy
Others have had this problem also. I see it on messages
boards. Thanks

I would suggest you reinstall the chipset drivers for your Motherboard, see if
new ones are available.
Speifically the AGP drivers..then reinstall your Video card drivers

I am using GeForce4 mx440 cards in my XP computers and
I am not seeing this sort of problem.. make sure that you are indeed
using the latest Nvidia forceware graphics drivers from the Nvidia
site (the latest for XP is version 56.72), and that you have the
drivers correctly installed (make sure to remove the old drivers
*before* installing the new drivers)

http://www.nvidia.com/content/drivers/drivers.asp

or more specifically for win XP:

http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_2k_56.72

Do not use the drivers on the windows update site, which are
not the latest drivers at all...

It sounds to me like you do not have the latest drivers, or perhaps
have a corrupted install of the latest drivers...

Addendum:

Other possibilities:

Corrupted install of XP - perform a clean install of XP, not an
"upgrade".

Power supply under powered (or possibly partially failing when it gets
hot?) to run your computer with XP.

Heat - Have you removed the dust from your computer lately?

Case fan(s) not working

Failing video card - gets hot and then blinks out until it cools off a
bit..

In other words, this problem may have nothing whatsoever to do with
installing XP, but may be a coincidental problem.
