I can't choose between the Geforce FX5900XT and the Radeon 9800 Pro, I
mainly want to play games, surf the net etc and would like games like Doom
3, Far Cry, Halflife 2, the Lord of the rings strategy etc..

Any suggestions on which to go for?

Many thanks

The XT range in nvidia cards are like LE cards from ATI. cut down budget
versions of the normal spec card. THe 9800Pro is about the same as a
5700Ultra so if the 9800Pro is the same or nearly the same price as a 5700XT
by the ATI card. Even if they`re not, buy the ATI card. Do you see a pattern
emerging? :)

He asked about the 5900XT not the 5700Ultra. The 5900XT is lower clock
speed version of the former top of the line 5900 which has now been
replaced by the 6800 and it's supposed to be much faster than the 5700.
The 5900XT was Nvidia's mechanism for getting rid of their inventory of
5900 chips, it was seen by the review sites as a huge bargain. I don't
know how it compares to the 9800Pro. I have one, it's been reliable and it
works fine with the standard Linux drivers as well as Nvidia's accelerated
drivers. I don't play games so I can't tell you anything about game
performance.

Finding good price on FX5900XT can be harder, so ultimately
you'd want to consider opposing prices you can find. R9800
Pro is slightly better hardware but slightly worse
drivers... which would effect you more is hard to say.
FX5900XT has potential to o'c higher percentage-wise so if
you o'c that might put it ahead, though if you're not using
a lot of FSAA or AF it also comes out ahead. For "out of
box" max eye candy possible, performance, the R9800 Pro is
the winner. Even so, might not be long till 6800NU is down
under $220 which might make it worth a few extra $$.

Some of your information is wrong. The 5900XT is a 5900 with lower
clocked, but faster, memory; they are equal in performance.

The 5700U is roughly 1/2-2/3 as fast as the 5900XT depending upon the game
and resolution, the higher you push it, the better the 5900XT performs
relative to the 5700U.

The differences between the 5900XT and 9800Pro vary wildly from game to
game but in general the 9800Pro is anywhere between 0-40% faster than the
5900XT.
