Geez ... rebooting .... please help.

I was having problems (artifacts) with my Connect3D Radeon 9600
(non-pro).

I blamed (apparently wrongfully) Connect3D.

Today I picked up an ATI Brand Radeon 9600XT. To my surprise I had
the same artifact problem. (But it was worse, the whole system would
freeze).

Anyway: I updated the system BIOS (ASUS A7V8X motherboard with AMD
2200+) That allowed me to reboot and cured the artifact issue.

BUT: The system spontaneously reboots for no apparent reason.

Any ideas on how to fix this issue? I'm just about ready to give up
on the 9600 line.

Could be a motherboard bios or drivers issue - try posting in asus
newsgroup.

i have a similar problem with my 9700 with random reboots, freezes etc, i
have very well ventilated case and i purchsed an artic cooler for card but
i have since discovered that it was still overheating , so to solve this
problem i have added a blowhole to case( a hole cut into case over vga with
80mm fan blowing cool air in ) this has fixed problem and bought my system
temp down to 22c from 38c ....so it as other benifits too

its worth a try, just get yer dremel out and hack ya case around ( :) loadsa
fun)

SO ... this could *still* be a heating issue?

I have noticed that the problem is worse if I turn the PC off for just
a few minutes and then turn it back on. (As if I'm working in it)
Does this exasperate the problem? (As the fans are not running while
it's off?)

Maybe I should just run my computer in the refridgerator. <GRIN>

what does the bios say your voltages are?

I would have to say that you should see what wattage your psu is too. The
mid-high end radeons & fx's are power hungry, some 9700's have a molex
connector so they can take power direct from psu. If you are thinking of
running a decent games rig then you should look at 450W and maybe above, esp
if you run 2 x opticals, 2 x hdd's plus usb kit etc.

Can't say this often enough...Check your Power Supply. In my
long and checkered career with PC's, random reboots have been PSU or
memory +/- 95% of the time. ATI says 300 watt min., I think that is
(as my mom has often said) "moo-cow poo-poo". If you have a system
with a Badass video card and 2+ HDD, 2+ CD/DVD drives, etc, ya need at
least 350 watts, preferably 400 or more. Yes, I know that there are
many people running systems chock full `o hardware on 300 watt PSU's
that aren't having problems (at least not that they attribute to the
PSU) but their PSU's are probably putting out more than their rating.

I am not a professional tech guy, this is just my opinion and
based on my personal experience.

IT's a 320W PS.

I'm running 2 HDDs, 1 Optical (DVDRW), a few external firewire devices
(1 hard disk with it's own PSU & an iPod), a USB scanner & a USB
wireless keyboard/moose ...)

This is not sufficient?

At post screen, "Hit 'DEL' to enter bios", (or something similar) text will appear. There are many different setup routines.
You will have to fan through the pages until you find the HARDWARE monitor. There you should find the output voltages of your PSU
(power supply). 320w is on the LOW side however if it is holding the proper voltages across all outputs, then chances 'are better'
that the PSU is not the culprit.
