Geez... how long has ATI's software been so awful?

Just fired up a new box this weekend with a Radeon X1950GT-based video
card in it and the "Catalyst Control Center" (v7.6) software simply
reeks.

While the drivers ->seem to be OK (what evil is lurking, I wonder), the
control stuff wouldn't even come up at first. Looking in the event log,
I find that it's emitting tons of errors (although I give them credit
for creating their own event class and logging all their errors).

I was able to get the thing running by re-naming one file, and moving
another into the root of "C:\", but I can't imagine how something like
that could have made it out the door of a commercial concern.

In "First of One"
Catalyst Control Center (CCC) requires Microsoft .NET Framework (v2.0
recommended) to function.

I have it. As I said, by manually moving some files around, I finally
got the thing to work.

The installation is somewhat hosed.

I'm using an ATI X1950XT with it. It installed fine and works fine.
The X1950XT is actually a bit faster than my 8800GTS 640 with an
Athlon 64 X 2 6000 when running FSX.

Which Catalyst version are you using? Installing 7.6 using the file from
AMD/ATI's Web site produced a broken installation and the Control Center
wouldn't run.

Turns out there were only two (visible) problems:

1) Some part of the app expected the file "Skins.xml" in <Program
Files>\ATI Technologies\ATI.ACE\Skins to be called "ccc-skins.xml".

2) Some other part of the app expected to find the file "Branding.dll"
from <Program Files>\ATI Technologies\ATI.ACE\Core-Static in the root of
the C drive.

Renaming and copying the files to where they were expected got things
running, but there's obviously some problem with the installation
procedure.

People in the kn ow don't use the ATI shitware. They download the core
drivers and then get Ray Adam's ATI TRay Tools from www.guru3d.com
A lot less cpu intenbsive and has a boat load of more options and
tweaking tools than the ATI shitware. That's what I used when I had an
X800XL installed but now use a Nvidia card so don't have to worry
about the ATI shitware for now. I have a friend with X1650pro and he
uses the ATI software and it is painfully slow waiting for the CC to
actually pop up. He's not a tweaker like me though so won't listen to
my good advice and get the Tray Tools instead.

Maybe a little OT but how is Tray tools on a laptop that get plugged
into a projector via VGA and plugged in a HDTV HDMI. Is Tray Tools
flexible in how the 2nd monitor is set up? I have kept with CCC because
the wizard easily adjust res. and timing for both the projector
(800x600) and the HDTV (1280x720 60P).

That's because it's a dotNet application.

Why don't you try it out? Tray Tools is a clean, standalone utility can
co-exist with CCC on the same system.

One thing I found Tray Tools couldn't do is toggle Crossfire mode. I ended
up using CCC for adjusting all my settings, plus Rivatuner for forcing fan
speeds individually on both cards.
