Hi,

I was using MS Antispyware until the version was replaced.

I tried to install the *new* version, but it requires XP SP2.

Unfortunately, I'm one of the few (million) that SP2 ruins my computer; no
matter how I try to install it (update, disk, slipstream).

I uninstalled the original, but in the registry there's over *60* references
to gcasdtserv.exe, and Microsoft Antispyware.

Question: Is it safe to delete all these entries from the registry? I know
to backup the registry before I do anything in it.

Thanks,
Chris

I can say that the entries are not needed anymore, but I won't say "safe."
It sounds like you are being careful, but I'd almost rather suggest using a
"reputable" registry cleaner over doing this by hand, if you feel it needs
to be done. Experts differ on whether this kind of task is worth doing, but
I tend to come down on the side of feeling it isn't worth the risk and
effort.

I'd sure encourage you to get some expert help on the SP2 issues. I haven't
seen such a machine, myself--but my experience isn't too broad--mostly Dells
in offices. Having SP2 on your machine is far more important than having
Windows Defender or alternative antispyware apps--worth putting some time
and effort into.

Hi Bill,

Thanks for replying. As far as SP2 goes, I called Microsoft when I installed
it and my system went buggier than a $2 whorehouse, and the *best* answer I
got was, and I quote: "FORMAT AND REINSTALL!"

Yeah, right. I've spent the past two years doing little tweaks everywhere to
get my system exactly as I want it; i.e., boots up in 48 seconds, shuts down
in 9 seconds, and just a ton of other stuff. Starting from scratch isn't an
option: I'd rather use Win95. At least then I'd know where the bugs were.

The drive I tried to update to SP2 was a backup drive. I had to reformat
and repartition the drive and recopy it. It works just like the original, now.

Do you think that's the reason for the disaster: my computer was tweaked
from the original (not overclocking or anything, just normal stuff)?
