Hi;

I consulted the Wilders Security forum concerning problems with (manually)
updating Spywareblaster and was referred to some websites which
unfortunately am not able to access:

http://www.javacoolsoftware.com
http://www.javacoolsoftware.info/kb/
http://www.spywareblaster.net/spywar...ckdatabase.dtb

Receive the following message(s):

Gateway Timeout
The following error occurred:
Code:
A gateway timeout occurred. The server is
unreachable. Retry the request.
Please contact the administrator.

Or

Server Error
The following error occurred:
[code=CANT_CONNECT] Could not connect because of networking problems.
Contact your
system administrator.
---

I don't have *any* problems whatsoever accessing *any* other websites.

I even added the above mentioned URL's to the Trusted Zone and rebooted but
no luck.

Any ideas as to what's causing this behaviour?

OS: WinXP Pro SP2 (IE6).

TIA.................Kayman,

I just downloaded IE7 a few days ago and I'm getting a huge number of these
horrendous delays myself in loading web pages. I know that these are not
popular sites, and I know that the servers are not the issue. Can't figure
out why it's so slow.

Hi Kayman,
First how you are trying to access the update (i.e. through proxy server or
a remote connections.
Try to check your Proxy setting under your connections Tab, also if you are
using a router try to access the router and check the settings there.
Could you * ping* the web address and make *tracert*

Something in the past happena and it was a COM+ is corrupt or damaged by
installing and uninstalling, you seem to the kind of person how
install/uninstall a lot of applications on your computer!.

Try this if the above didn't make sense:
Open Run Command and type:
regedit.exe or regedit32.exe click [OK]
On the Registry Editor try to locate this key and delete the *COM3* // *
Please back up your registry first as you can revert back to your old reg if
this screw up things*

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SoftwarE\Microsoft\*COM3*
Reboot your computer and then open the Run command and type these DLLs to
register them:
regsvr32 /s ole32.dll
regsvr32 /s oleaut32.dll

Then Try to reinstall the IIS ( Internet Information Service) from the
Add/Remove Windows Components by Clicking on Start >> Control Panel >>
Add/Remove Programs >> on the Left-side Panel click on Add/Remove Windows
Components and there scroll down and check the box opposite:
[ ] Internet Information Service (IIS) and click on Next to install the
IIS.
Reboot your machine and Hopefully you are done and try the web address.
If still no joy read this article:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314067/

HTH.

No surprise there. "Help_and_Support" in fact refers to WinXP: Start > Help
and Support, not general help & support for computer problems. <wink>

Thanks for responding, nass.

"First how you are trying to access the update (i.e. through proxy server or

I check the up-dates for SpywareBlaster through remote connection (dial-up
56K).

"Try to check your Proxy setting under your connections Tab, also if you are
using a router try to access the router and check the settings there."

I don't have a router, SpywareBlaster is permitted to pass my ZA firewall .

"Could you * ping* the web address and make *tracert*"

I tracert 67.43.10.91 ( 18 hops) - the trace scan appears to be okay.

"...you seem to the kind of person how install/uninstall a lot of

Well, not quite, I am however very vigilant in up-dating my AV/A-S software
and relevant MS security patches etc..
Most recently I installed MS .NET Framework 3.0 but uninstalled again as I
thought this to be the cause for not being able to update Spywareblaster. I
also installed MS Baseline Security Analyzer 2.0.1.
That's about it :)

"On the Registry Editor try to locate this key and delete the *COM3* // *"

I am unable to locate *COM3* // and /or *COM3* , but found only COM3 .

A scan with Network Diagnostics did not reveal anything out of the
ordinarily

It was a really poor choice for the newsgroup name, wasn't it?

Hi Kayman,
Sorry I meant COM3 but I put it in between ** to tell you just this not the
Whole Key.
Well, before going to delete the Key, go to your Connections tab and click
on LAN button and uncheck [ ] Automatically Detect Settings . close IE
properties and try.
Turn OFF or Disable ZA and see if that will help, sometimes some New
definitions by updating ZA can think that you are under attak and holt the
connection by timing out!.
If that didn't help, I have another thread where the OP said that after
downloading NET the profile corrupted and by creating a new profile things
gone back to normal, but do that after doing the Deletion of the KEY in the
Registry if it wasn't a success.
HTH.

Hi nass.

You suggested:

"...go to your Connections tab and click on LAN button and uncheck [ ]
Automatically Detect Settings . close IE
properties and try."

Unchecked, tried but no luck.

"Turn OFF or Disable ZA and see if that will help..."

Nope, that didn't work either; I then reversed the above actions

"If that didn't help, I have another thread where the OP said that after
downloading NET the profile corrupted and by creating a new profile things
gone back to normal, but do that after doing the Deletion of the KEY in the
Registry if it wasn't a success."

I am reluctant playing with registry items. Would it help if I were to
uninstall the .NET Frameworks? My pc is running very well, it's snappy and
very responsive - no (other) problems whatsoever. I can access every other
website on www except the ones mentioned in my original post. Also, I am
unsure as how to create a new profile.

Thanks for continued assistance.
Cheers...................Kayman.

Hi nass;

You also suggested:

"Then Try to *reinstall* the IIS ( Internet Information Service)..."

According to 'Windows Component Wizard' the Internet Information Services
(IIS) 13.5MB checkbox is unchecked and I am not sure if this application was
ever installed.
Should I go ahead installing this component without tweaking the registry
item first?

Also, Is it okay that the Internet Explorer 0.0KB checkbox is checked
whereas the MSN Explorer 20.7MB checkbox is unchecked?

Regards........................Kayman.

Hi Kayman,
If you backup your Registry settings on a Floppy or a folder on your system
say and done the registry editing and wasn't success you can restore your
registry from the backup copy you created before editing the Registry.

About Installing IIS yes go ahead and install or repair it if it have been
installed.
Check the Internet explorer beside MSN Explorer and see if that will help,
always wrte down what you did change you can come back and reverse the
procedure if nothing solved your problem.

About creating a new profile and getting your data from the old profile if
the Old one being corrupted read this link:

HTH.
Please let us know.

I don't have a Floppy.
In regedit, I located HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\COM3 .
In 'Edit', if I click 'Delete' will I be prompted to back-up first prior
deleting this string/key?

Hi Keyman,

About the floppy scenario, you can backup to a CD/DVD or on a local folder
where easy accessable to you.
About the ISS read this:
http://www.microsoft.com/WindowsServer2003/iis/default.mspx
you can download the IIS Lockdwon tool to block any extra unwanted features
that can compromise your Server or computer, that if you want to use IIS !.
Rather than this I realy can't see other option for resolving this Issue
other can be to repair the Winsock on your system or the ISP is busy and
timing you out.
