I purchased a Gateway laptop in July 2003. The "worm" got
me and I finally got it out, I thought. Have all the
virus software, etc. BUT when I went to re-install
Windows XT I found that even though I'd written the number
down that was pasted on the bottom of the computer it
would not make "contact" with the CD and so I was unable
to re-install XT. I contacted Gateway and got a very
unsatisfactory answer. Can anyone tell me where I can get
the information of how to get this XT to re-install
outside of purchasing yet another copy of the XT operating
system. I am so upset I'd really like to contact the
president of Gateway.

So contact the CEO of Gateway. BTW change XT to Windows® XP.

Pat;
Go here:
http://www.webtree.ca/windowsxp/repair_xp.htm
Near the bottom "View Product Key XP"
The key displayed may not be accurate if you have not already
reinstalled.
This is because most OEMs use a key during the image process that is
not suitable for reinstalling.
Also if Windows is not installed, this will not work.

Is the Product Key gone from the bottom of the computer?
Many characters look alike O-0, I-1, S-5, G-6 and others.

There is no requirement for the OEMs or anyone else to keep a copy of
the Product Key. the safe keeping of the key is the responsibility of
the owner.

Otherwise you may just have to buy another copy.
