Can anyone please suggest some sort of CAD program to assist me in
redesigning my garden area? Something basic would be perfectly
adequate.

Regards,
Colin

Not sure it qualifies as CAD but there is a pretty good draw program in
OpenOffice.org which can be found at the website of the same name.

Same family - both use vectors (versus paint programs that use bitmaps).
A draw program might be a good choice for garden planning.

Suggestion for OP - create a "measuring stick" to show the scale of the
drawing - especially helpful when/if you print it.

draw/CAD apps that have been mentioned in ACF are listed here:

I've played with this CAD app *very* briefly. It could be used for
garden planning. IIRC it's fairly easy to get started using it and it's
a small download - it may be a little too basic.

Program: Room Arranger
Author: (Jan Adamec)

Ware: Freeware v. 3.26

Nice little program. Might want to get a 3D-viewer to view and
navigate your rooms in 3D,see
<http://www.roomarranger.com/help.html#explore3D>.
My girlfriend been using it with the Cosmo Player listed there.
A tad difficult to navigate with precision ISTM, but works ok.

I read some of the info - it looked a tad complicated. I was looking for
something for "the kids" to use for kitchen planning. "KISS" was the
first requirement so I didn't try the 3D.

I went on to try the IKEA kitchen planner (with built-in 3D). It's much
easier to work with (but less versatile) as the "furnishings" have
already been created. I recently figured out that this is part of a
"family" of apps. This is the "parent" app:

Program: Furnish
Author: Geac Computer Corporation Limited
Ware: released as Freeware under various names
http://www.runtime.geac.com/page/visualconfigurator_RT.html

"Children" include the IKEA kitchen planner and office planner, FLEXA 3D
Design - some others I haven't sorted out yet. . . another project on
the to-do list. . . ;)

hmm. . . I seem to have strayed away from garden design - none of these
apps are suitable for that - yet another hijacked thread. . . ;)

Girlfriend been playing with their kitchen planner too, seems easy to
use yes. But as you say - less versatile.

Interesting. I looked for download link, but no find, so I guess this
is only for manufactures etc...or did I miss something?
Interesting to know anyway, what Ikea and others based their software
on.

I believe IKEA et al pay Geac to create "branded" software packages
which they then release as Freeware to promote their products.

IOW - Geac makes software and sells it - *others* release the Geac
software as Freeware. . .
