hey all just wanted to know if this can be a gaming system:

AMD ATHLON 64 2800+
ASUS K8V SE DELUXE
1280MB DDR3200 OF MEMORY
GAINWARD FX5200 GOLDEN SAMPLE 128MB
WINDOWS XP PRO
SOUNDBLASTER AUDIGY GAMER
2-80GB SATA WD HARD DRIVES

If there is anything that you would change, any input i would like to have.
Going to be building a gaming machine and i would like to know if this is a
good configuration.Keep in mind that i am on a budget LOL

That sounds like a great gaming rig. Are you going to set up a RAID array
with your SATA drives?
Grafix card could be better but we're not made of money.....

You really need to change the video card if you want a "gaming" system. I
have an FX5200 in the system I recently built. It does well enough for
Flight Simulator on medium or a little higher settings but I know it would
not be good for the current version of the higher action games and it will
definitely need to be replaced before too long. I was on a budget too, so
that is why I went with that card. It is fine for most of my uses but if
you need to wait a while to save up for a better card since you want a
"gaming" system, do so.

My $.02,

Doug

BTW, if you do get any Nvidia card, make sure to Google for the Coolbits
overclocking hack!

Doug

I am hoping to get a bigger Vid card soon, and how does this "COOLBITS"
work???,is it an over clocking software for nforce cards?

is it an over clocking software for nforce cards<<

Actually, it just unlocks the overclocking feature that was built into the
Nvidia driver but "hidden" by Nvidia. It modifies the Nvidia registry to
allow you to access it.

Doug

OH,by the way i did install EXPERT TOOL that comes with the Gainward
card,and it is working great.

The 5200 video card is slowww. You will be VERY unhappy with it for games.
The rest of your system is quite fast; should be excellent for games if you
get a decent video card.

The graphic card is not going to cut it for a gaming system. You really
want some 9600XT (or higher) from ATI, or 6600 (or higher) from nvidia.
If you're on a budget, ditch the second hd (raid-0 is mostly useless
anyway, and certainly way less important than a decent graphic card),
though might want a 160GB one if you need more storage (still much
cheaper than 2 80GB ones). And if you still have not enough money to
afford a decent graphic card, get rid of the sound card. Onboard audio
isn't THAT bad (again, the graphic card is just far more important).
Also, you might not need the features the K8V SE Deluxe offers over the
K8V-X, that should save some money too.
If you don't already own it, might also consider XP Home.
And I think you meant 1024MB ram...

Aready have the stuff on order, the video card,i already have in this
system.I also have a RaidMax samurai case coming aswell. I also have the
sound card. but already orderd the harddrives and other things. and thats
1.25GB of memory,thats 2-512 and 1-256,Memory i have from another system
will work with the Asus board,i did check that out. Thanks for the Input
all.So the next question, whats a great card for gaming :)

I have a very similar system, A8V Deluxe, 128 PC3200 setup in Dual Channel
mode and a BFG 6800 OC card with all the pipelines enabled with RivaTuner.

I agree with Roland - Ditch the second hard drive and upgrade the video
card. The BFG 6800 OC is very reasonably priced and is a great Gaming card.
Excellent graphics and very smooth video with all settings on the highest
video settings in games.

I agree, the 2 HDD,s are costly and raid 0 is useless. You might as well
use ghost and send an image to a spare partition. You can get a 200GB
drive for $120.

The vid card is the only dud in your system.

The K8V is a S754 socket Athlon64. If you download the manual for
the board, before you buy it, you'll find a table of memory
configurations ("Table 1: Recommended Memory Configurations").
If you look at line 18 of that table, you'll find the fastest
memory configuration, which is two double sided DDR400 sticks
in slots 1 and 3 of the board. If you try to use your 256MB DIMM
as a third stick of memory, the memory speed will have to drop,
and that will reduce performance. As Roland suggested, it is
likely you'll be running a 1024MB system, if you want a good
gaming system.

I have a FX5200 in an A7N8X-E system here. The FX5200 is good,
in that it has nearly full hardware support for DirectX 9, it
is fanless (if the memory interface is 64bit instead of 128bit),
and makes a good choice for playing movies. But for 3DMark,
I got 5000 for 3DMark2001, which is anywhere from 3x to 6x less
performance than a real gaming system. My processor is overclocked
to 2200MHz, so the card is at fault in this case. (Some day, if
Nvidia can find a way to make the 6200 PCI-E available as an
AGP card, without needing the expensive bridge chip, that will be
the low cost card of choice. That is, if their marketing
department has a clue.)

To select a card, Anandtech and Tomshardware have jumbo video card
articles, where they compare benchmarks. The latest card mentioned,
is an AGP version of the 6600, which I think is only available right
now as the 6600GT. To compete with Nvidia, ATI has decided to flood
the market with a never ending stream of model numbers, intended
to confuse and annoy customers. It may take you some amount of
effort to find just the right card for your budget. As these
review sites have noted, the average price of video cards has been
rising over the past year or two, to the point that a decent video
card can do serious damage to the wallet.

Nvidia 6600GT, ATI 9800 Pro (if you can find one) might be good:
http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=2277&p=7

There are plenty of other reviews that have charts comparing the
cards, so keep looking on those two sites.

Meant to type - 1 gig of pc 3200 memory.

I've heard good things about the ATI 9550, cheaper than the 9600 but still
has dx9 support and is supposed to be pretty fast for most current games.

Cheers!

So have I - but only about the 128 MB 128 bit version!!

It's by no means a card for a gaming system though. Basically half the
speed of the 9600XT (exactly half the gpu clock), which itself I would
think is just borderline acceptable for "serious" gaming nowadays.
