Thanks for your tips on the flash. Muchly appreciated. I'm actually an
old hand at this who's just been absent from the constant upgrade path
and incessant outpouring of $$$$ in quest for gaming performance for a
while. Got a box full of what were once good for boasting rights, but
now represent nothing more than just expensive 'junk' here. Reactor
Rendition Verite PCI, Diamond S220 Rendition Verite II PCI (well
nothing really to boast about there
, Diamond Monster 3Dfx Voodoo,
Quantum 3Dfx Voodoo 2 x2 (SLI), Diamond Viper Riva 128 (PCI), Diamond
Viper Riva 128 AGP, ASUS GeForce AGP, Gigabyte TNT2Pro,
Hercules Prophet GeForce MX...and before that (& 3D) a stack of S3 and
other Kings and Queens of their respective era units. I can even
remember when the ISA bus Western Digital Paradise was King for a day!
Had one of those...'spensive little sucker it was at the time too.
Back then, Falcon 3 was what represented leading edge graphics, and
you had to allocate a whopping 16MB on your 100MB hard drive to
install it!
I thought I'd lucked it picking up a early segment price drop 256MB
9600XT advertised with an online reseller. I ordered it, but it turned
out to be either bait and switch or a pricing error to which they
didn't wish to accompany with an admission of the fact ....so it's
back to plan C.
Unlike the 9600XT, right now the 128 bit 9550 is acceptable to my
budget. And whilst it certainly doesn't offer boasting rights, suspect
it will do a reasonable job of meeting my expectations. I doubt I'll
have need of 256MB for the resolutions at which I'll have to run
anything contemporary with the 9550 chipset, though older games and
sims will certainly do OK with it. The 256MB versions are only a few
dollars dearer than the 128MB versions, so having committed to
stepping up to the 128 bit memory bus from the SE versions (between
$30 & $40 more than the SE on average), I can wear the extra $8 to $10
for double the DDR.
