Some newer games (GTA:VC, Cmbt Flt Sim 3, Superbike 2000, maybe more) run perfectly right after install, but then stop responding at all (no error msg.). Anyone with this same problem please email me-> (e-mail address removed)
Jimmy s, thanks much for the reply. Tonight I acctually tried to post two messages earlier but I guess I only got the last one up, the one that I did post was more of a post-script to my main message...oops.
Basically what I wanted to say was that I did try the advice you gave, they were great suggestions, but unfortunately they did not solve the problem, so I wanted to give you some more info about my system and what I've been doing.
The problem also occured before, when I was running XP home as an operating system (now I use pro). Also, it occured before I was ever connected to the internet, ruling out patches and updates which I now have. I have the newest drivers for both my video card (radeon 9600pro) and sound card (TB Santa Cruz), but just to be sure, I reinstalled both drivers from the manufacturers web-sites today...problem persisted. I disabled my secondary disc-drive. I've reinstalled windows before too. I have SP1.
I use a P4 2.6 with an Intel board-865perl chipset, bios 9. I've tried clean start-ups, I don't use a virus program, and I don't have Kazaa.
The weird thing is, after install, the games run beautifully...does this rule out vid/snd card problems? It seems that it has do with a function of XP that takes place behind the scences. The only thing might be the critical updates for XP... I've opted not to download about 7 or so (but have most) because they seem to be security stuff for networking programs I never use and don't have, should I just get all of them anyway?
I've read of a few people having the same problem, is this something specific to my machine or is it a known issue? Thanks again for your quick, insightful help. qmed
