Unless your computer has Windows XP installation files in a partition on
your hard drive you will need your Windows XP installation or system
Recovery CD.

Click the Start button on the tool bar. Then click the Control Panel
link in the second colomn. Once the Control Panel window opens, open the
Add or Remove Programs or Windows Components applet. Click on
Accessories and Utilities to highligh it and click the Details button.
In the Accessories and Utilities popup highlight Games and click that
window's Details button. You can then activate the check boxes for the
games you want to install. Click on OK buttons to close all those
popups. If you need a CD the computer will ask for it.

Sometimes the games will become damaged and unable to run. Often you can
uncheck the damaged game in the windows described above and close the
windows with the OK button to remove the damaged installation. You can
often restablish a working installation by performing the add components
procedure listed above.

The games which come with Windows XP are "system" files. Even if one were
to manually delete one of the files in Windows Explorer, the system will
replace them.

Due to virus, had to have Windows XP removed and reinstalled. The games such
as free cell, solitaire, etc. that came with Windows XP are no longer there.
When I click on Games, it says "Empty." Is there a way I, a handicapped
senior citizen with little expertise in computers, can restore the games?
Thank you very much in advance.

Hi Chris

I had the same problem and tried out what you recommended. It didn't work -
the games folder is still empty. I didn't know whether I was installing or
removing components as the Add/Remove Windows Components function doesn't
differentiate between [adding] and [removing]. It just says, "To add or
remove a component, click the checkbox."

So when I click the checkbox, am I adding or removing?

This is all quite confusing - I do not want to accidentally remove
everything from Windows Accessories and Utilities just to install back the
games.

If I'm not able to restore the old system settings (i.e. with the games
still intact), can I download those games (free cell, spider solitaire etc.)
from any Microsoft website or are there Windows fixes out there? Please help.
Thanks!

Damian

Checking one of the boxes means you want to install the game listed to the
right of the box. You need to Apply and OK your way completely back out of
Control Panel, and then restart your system for it to take affect. The
games are native to the XP operating system, and are not available for
download separately. If this method fails, you may need to do a Repair
installation as described here:
http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm Please note the
warnings before attempting a Repair Install.
