I have Windows XP on my PC. All my games worked fine. Windows did an automatic update and now Sherlock Holmes and The Omega Stone wont play. They start up fine but as soon as I click to play they just drop back to my desktop

Please Help

Hi Julie,

Please try reinstalling those two games if they are the only games
that demonstrate that behaviour, otherwise we can troubleshoot
the situation by reverting your system back to the day before the
update took place to see which update it installed. For example,
if it was a video driver update, then it may have been the wrong
version in which case we would try updating your Video drivers
using the instructions at: http://mvps.org/nibblesnbits/Video.html#drivers

Hi Julie,

I thought this sounded familiar, so I did some investigating. There is a
recommended update in Windows Update that might fix your issue. Here's the
Microsoft Knowledge Base article about it:

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=327979

Please install this update and see if this corrects your problem. Let us
know what happens!

Thanks!

Hi

Thanks for the help and advice.

Have tried updating my video drivers and installed the XP patch.
But unfortunately the games still drop back to my desktop.

Can you suggest anything else please.

Here are some solutions (and workarounds) to deal with the problem where games minimize to the Task Bar.

1. Keyboard software has been known to cause this problem. One player
posted that by un-installing their Trust Silverline Direct Access keyboard
software, all their games worked again without minimizing to the Task Bar.

2. Norton's AntiVirus (Internet Security) can cause the problem as well. The
workaround is to disable the program. To do so, right click it's Tray icon.

3. Yet another workaround is to click the screen after you launch the game.

If the problem persists, please try these additional troubleshooting steps. :-)

The most common causes for that problem can be solved with
these few steps. If the problem persists after you've tried these,
please post back and we'll try some more solutions. Good luck! :-)

A. To see if it's a software conflict: Temporarily disable Startup
programs one at a time, starting with Firewall, Antivirus, and ad
blockers using: http://new.jtsoft2001.com/windows/startup.php

You can lookup what a program does before you disable it here:
http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php

B. Run a virus scan at: http://housecall.antivirus.com Afterwards
Download & Run Spybot from: http://security.kolla.de to find any
Trojans, Adware, or Spyware which could clog up your system.

C. Click My Computer / Rightclick the Drive & Choose Properties
/ Run the "Disk Cleanup..." / Next Click the "Tools" Tab and run
the "Error-Checking" and "Defragmentation" utilities.

D. Go to the Windows Update site for everything under Critical and
Recommended: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com Some games
require a patch: http://www.avault.com/pcrl/patches_list.asp?letter=a

E. Update DirectX and your Chipset, Sound, &Video Drivers:

Hi

Thanks for the help

I have tried everything that you have advised

But the games will still not work. This goes back to an automatic update in October 03

These are the updates :

KB824141 (I have removed this one. I think it was replaced
KB82318
KB82511
KB82803
KB82802
KB828750

Hi Julie,

You can verify if it was replaced in Add-Remove programs.

You can disable the automatic updates: Go to Control Panel /
System / Automatic Updates / Uncheck "Keep my computer.."

Remove the update you suspect is at fault, and reboot. Test
the game. Don't forget to enable Automatic Updates afterwards.

I hope this helps to at least narrow down the cause of the issue.

Hi

Have checked Add/Remove programs, the KB824141 hot fix has definatley
been removed. Rebooted PC but games still drop to desktop. Although they di
play before. I thought i might have been able to restore my computer back to befor
the automatic update. But i can't go back to September 03 or October 03.

Hi Julie,

Perhaps the hotfix didn't install properly and caused a glitch which cannot be
corrected by simply removing the hotfix itself. Let's try repairing Windows. :-)

How To Repair Windows:
Unplug from your Internet connection, and then repair Windows:
using this method: http://michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

Afterwards, boot up your system, turn on your XP Internet Firewall,
plug back into your Internet connection and install all Critical and

Hi

My games are now working again.

Thank you very much for your help and patience.

I re-install Windows XP, backed up all my files, but haven't lost any programs, files or settings.
Just the corrupt Hot fix. So I am very pleased, I had visions of having to reload lots of things.

Thanks once again.

Julie

That's great news to end the week on Julie.
Glad I could help! :-)

Cheers,
Jimmy.
