games crash XP

I'm in desperate need of help. I have an Athlon XP 3000+ 512MB DDR RAM running XP trial and anything involving my video card consistently causes the computer to freeze or restart (this includes DVD playing and games). I have tried both my nvidia and Ati Radeon with updated drivers but they both have the same problem, with the Nvidia crashing a little more frequently (on the XP welcome screen mostly). Is there anything i can do? I usually use Me but thought i'd make a go of XP for the trial period. Would reinstalling Me help and how would I do it?

Install the latest motherboard chipset drivers for your motherboard. You
need them so as to have the correct AGP slot drivers installed. XP just
comes with a standard AGP slot driver and may/may not work with all AGP
slot/chipsets out. Yours seems to not like it too much.

just downloaded the newest motherboard drivers to find out they are the ones i already have. reinstalled them and still no good! it just crashed and restarted when i was browsing the internet. This is really getting to me now!

This can happen if your computer's temperature is too high from heavy processor activity; gaming actually makes a computer hotter than just about any other form of network application. Some gamers recommend removing your system's case and trying that for awhile. It may not eliminate the crashes, but you should be able to play much longer between restarts... if heat is in fact your problem.
Another source of computer restarts may be the sound system. Try playing with the sound turned off to see if that makes a difference. Your audio drivers may need updating, or the game may simply be incompatible with your audio setup.

The third possibility to consider is excessive memory usage. Perhaps a component of your system has a "leak" that uses up all of the memory, and the operating system will almost always "hang" when it runs out of memory. While you are playing a game, look at the Windows Task Manager (or equivalent on other operating systems) to see if your memory consumption keeps growing. Usage typically increases after booting and when new applications are started, but this should stabilize in a minute or two.

One more possible culprit is the driver for your video card. There may be a "bug" in the video device driver causing the system crash. These problems are difficult to prove conclusively, but the organizations that produce video drivers often make updated versions available for free that fix such problems. You need to determine the make and model of the video card from the specs that came with the system or by searching the manufacturer's Web site.

Good Luck

Another thing to look at is your power supply... a weak power supply can cause you to re-boot under heavy loads.

Another reason can be drivers, try updating your graphics card, direct X drivers.

Well...next time you install an new Windows...make it on empty system
partition :)

Now for reinstallation ME

1) If your hdd partitions are still FAT
run the ME disk as bootdisk,
- choose un with CD ROM
- go to your CD rom drive in DOS mode, go to WIN9x directory and type
"Format c:" - it will erase all your partition data
- reinstall ME

2) IF you have you partition changed to NTFS (ME doesn't recognise it)
- boot machin with XP disk first, then select install new system, and follow
instructions till you go to install selection
- remove partition, and choose "quick format in FAT 32 mode"
- install ME

I hope it helps

Andrzej

PS...check your temperature inside the case....heat may be the problem

yea, just leave the case open a bit so that the fan can cool off faster and so that it can cool the hardware as well, also try getting a new fan for it.
