Hi swatson,

The following applies to most games in general, and not just to the games that
may be listed in the KB Article refered to in this post.

SYMPTOMS:

When you start or play any one of the games that is listed in the "Applies to" section, you may experience one or more of the
following symptoms:

..The game stops responding.
..The game quits unexpectedly.
..The computer restarts unexpectedly.
..The game stops and an error occurs

Additionally, you may receive the following error message after you receive the Gathering Exception Data dialog box:
<Game Name>has encountered a problem and needs to close.

RESOLUTION:

Method 1: Restart your computer by using a clean boot procedure
Method 2: Remove and Reinstall the Game
Method 3: Adjust graphics hardware acceleration
Method 4: Disable AGP Texturing in the DirectX Diagnostic tool
Method 5: Temporarily disable the sound card in Windows
Method 6: Lower sound acceleration
Method 7 : Download and install the most recent version of DirectX
Method 8: Update your video driver
Method 9: Update your sound driver
Method 10: Scan your computer for viruses
Method 11: Remove spyware
Method 12: Install the latest VIA chipset drivers

Hi,

Thanks, but I have actually tried all of those suggestions plus others. I'm
really getting desperate. Anyone else have any ideas?

Thanks,

did you buy a refurbished or new. these are the same issues i am having and
i have done alot of things as well and it's not working

Hi swatson,

To find the solution to this problem we need to determine the cause.
The best way to determine the cause would be by using process of
elimination. Please post all the steps you have tried already in as
much detail as possible. That should narrow things down a lot. :-)

New Asrock dual sata2 939 mobo w/AMD Athlon 64 3700 and 2x512MB Crucial RAM.
Started with a clean install of Windows XP, installed Service Pack 2 and all
other critical updates. Installed latest directx and newest drivers for
everything I could think of. Re-installed games after crashes started.
Tried different hard drive cable. Ran and re-ran spyware and virus checkers.
Ran memtest and Microsoft's memory diagnostic. Changed hardware
accleration. Tried older video drivers, just in case. Disabled onboard
sound. Reformatted hard drive and started all over again with same problem.
Bought a new video card--Radeon x800GT0 to replace Radeon 9800 pro--still had
same problem.

Anything I may have missed?

Hi swatson,

Thank you for posting that update. I will be mulling over it to see
what type of troubleshooting should be attempting next, and in the
meantime we might have some suggestions from other readers too.

One more thing that has happened since... I received a blue screen stop error
msg (STOP: 0x0000008E) and another error event:

I really appreciate any help anyone could give.

Hi swatson,

Here a couple of references about that error which could help:
http://www.experts-exchange.com/Hardware/Q_21028641.html
and
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;827663

If the above don't resolve the issue, perhaps your RAM is mismatched.
I realise that you've passed two tests already, however perhaps you
may want to test with only one 512 MB stick installed at a time. Test
both sticks this way.

Hi colt44,

The following applies to most games in general, and not just to the games that
may be listed in the KB Article refered to in this post.

SYMPTOMS:

When you start or play any one of the games that is listed in the "Applies to" section, you may experience one or more of the
following symptoms:

..The game stops responding.
..The game quits unexpectedly.
..The computer restarts unexpectedly.
..The game stops and an error occurs

Additionally, you may receive the following error message after you receive the Gathering Exception Data dialog box:
<Game Name>has encountered a problem and needs to close.

RESOLUTION:

Method 1: Restart your computer by using a clean boot procedure
Method 2: Remove and Reinstall the Game
Method 3: Adjust graphics hardware acceleration
Method 4: Disable AGP Texturing in the DirectX Diagnostic tool
Method 5: Temporarily disable the sound card in Windows
Method 6: Lower sound acceleration
Method 7 : Download and install the most recent version of DirectX
Method 8: Update your video driver
Method 9: Update your sound driver
Method 10: Scan your computer for viruses
Method 11: Remove spyware
Method 12: Install the latest VIA chipset drivers
Method 13: Create a new user account in Windows XP
Method 14: Change the compatibility setting

|| Hi swatson,
||
|| Here a couple of references about that error which could help:
|| http://www.experts-exchange.com/Hardware/Q_21028641.html
|| and
|| http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;827663
||
|| If the above don't resolve the issue, perhaps your RAM is mismatched.
|| I realise that you've passed two tests already, however perhaps you
|| may want to test with only one 512 MB stick installed at a time. Test
|| both sticks this way.
