The past 2 months now i get the same problem with windows crushes
but only when i a playing games and specialy in Cutshenes. i have no crashes
in
any other applications but only in games.Not when i hear music or have any
other application in use.
these are the 3 following games i had windows crash (X-men 3:official game
in level 3 (firstplay with Nightcrowler can't be bypassed), Cronicles of
riddick in almost every cutshene and loading area, and Da Vinchi code crashed
to desktop in every level change following by a cutshene.

my system is
intel P4 2,4 with 1024mb of ram
2x40GB HD witch in the first in my OS win XP pro SP2
and 1x 160GB sata
my video card is the FX 5900 xt with the latest drivers.

i think my problem have to do with my video card as it's a bit old
as my system but i didnt had any other problems in the past especialy
with the most hard test of tes:Oblivion but now i don't know what to do.

If anyone had the same problem and beeing able to fix it, or any suggestions
please respond.
sorry for my BAD English and thnks in advance

Yassoo george-greece,

You may not have the latest drivers if you updated them from the Windows
Update site instead of from nVidia.com's website. Afterwards, there are
still other drivers and considerations to troubleshoot, Georgos, as follows:

Updating video card drivers can solve most gaming issues. Here's some
simple abc's to always keep in mind. a. Shut off download accelerators,
firewalls and antivirus programs when downloading or installing updates;
b. Check for game patches: www.avault.com/pcrl/patches_list.asp?letter=a
c. Make sure you meet the game's minimum video and system requirements;
d. Check for known issues with your video card at the game's web site. :-)

1. Before you update your drivers, I recommend that you update DirectX
from: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/directx/default.aspx

Here are the steps I recommend you use to update your driver. If you've
never done this before I recommend you also look over the Installation hints
and Release Notes both of which are linked to from their download page.

2. Download the latest drivers from: www.nvidia.com/content/drivers/drivers.asp

3. Save the .exe driver in My Documents\My Drivers\nVidia

4. Restart the computer in Safe Mode by pressing the F8 key
about once every second as it's rebooting to pick Safe Mode.

5. Click Start / (settings) Control Panel / System / Hardware
Device Manager / expand +Display Adapters / right click on
the adapter, pick "Uninstall", and click No if asked to reboot.

6. Use Control Panel / Add-Remove programs to uninstall the
previous driver (exe)software which may have been installed.

7. Restart the computer in Safe Mode by pressing the F8 key
about once every second as it's rebooting to pick Safe Mode.

8. If Windows prompts you to install the adapter, click "Cancel".

9. Double click the nVidia driver we saved to My Documents\My
Drivers\nVidia folder in step 3 to install.it. If it complains about
Windows Logo Certification just click "Continue". This is normal.

10. After you reboot, go to Control Panel / Display / Settings and
choose 32 bit Color Quality, and 800x600 or higher Resolution.

TROUBLESHOOTING:

Test your drivers using DXDiag: Click Start / Run / type: DXDIAG
Click the "Test" buttons in the Display, Sound, Music & Network Tabs;
If any of the Display options are Disabled and you cannot Enable them,
your most likely solution would be to update your Chipset Drivers as per
my website: http://www3.sympatico.ca/nibblesnbits/Video.html#v11

Your program might not support dual monitors, or "dual head" video cards
You can disable the extra video output in your display properties control
panel. Click Start>Settings>Control Panel>Display>Settings>Advanced.

Along with your Video card, Sound Cards, Motherboard Chipsets,
and Video Monitors may also require updated drivers. Even your
motherboard's BIOS may need to be updated for compatibility with
your Video card. These steps are listed at: http://NibblesNbitsVideo.tk

Perhaps the old Nvidia drivers did not completely uninstall. If that's the
case, use this utility to completely uninstall the drivers and go to step 7:
http://content.guru3d.com/index.php?page=detonatorrip&menu=0

The latest video drivers sometime don't work with a particular game.
(Check the Video suggestions in the readme.txt file in your game folder/CD)
If there's no suggestions, try an older (WHQL) driver, and/or if you still
experience problems try a Beta driver, or even an Omega driver instead:

BETA Drivers: http://download.guru3d.com/
OMEGA Drivers: http://www.omegadrivers.net

There you have it, if you have any questions feel free to post them! :-)

so i here again with tears on my face:(
nothing worked so far.
i have instaled the latest drivers, formated the HD that i had the games
instaled
tuned my hardware acceleration off from my video preferences,
also cleaned manualy my cpu cooler (get it off from the cpu and place it
again later
with less than 2cm of dust that had before:D).used bitdefender 9 pro and
microsoft
antispyware scan.no trace of virus anywhere. and also installed the latest
DX aprils release updates.
seams that my MB have not internal digital sensors for heating coz my bios
setup screen indicates 42-45 Celcius, speedfan indicates 72 c and Hmonitor
''112 c".
Question: if it was a heating problem wouldn't my windows crash all the
time,specialy when i use High cpu usage proggrams?
i get the crashes only in games and specialy in cutshenes.
i am thinking to reinstall my win XP in another hard drive and try to play
the same
games from that operator.
i really dont know what else to do.
thnks in advance and sorry for my crap english. Geia sas kai kalimera:D

Hi george-greece,

| Question: if it was a heating problem wouldn't my windows crash all the

| i get the crashes only in games and specialy in cutshenes.

Hardware issues can cause freezing, black screens and other
errors. Also, your drivers should always be kept up to date.

< Kai to kapnisma den to kani kalo, opos kseries... ;-) >

Try the following steps one at a time to try and resolve the issue.
I hope this helps. Please post back if you have any questions! :-)

1. Update DirectX and your Chipset, Sound, &Video Drivers:
For all Video / DirectX / Game and Hardware Issues, I have a
Checklist of Solutions at: http://NibblesNbitsVideo.tk

2. Dust your fans, vents and components using a 1/4" paintbrush
and a hose vacuum. Use compressed air for hard to reach places.
Set a housefan to blow cold air into your case to expose an over-
heating issue.. If it works add more fans or replace defective ones.
Use this Motherboard Monitor Utility: http://mbm.livewiredev.com

3. A faulty power supply can cause STOP errors, random reboots,
and black screen lockups. One way to test for that is to check the
wattage sticker on your power supply and then calculate your need
http://www.jscustompcs.com/power_supply/ (Min. 350 for gaming)

4. Test your RAM using: http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp

|||| Yassoo george-greece,
||||
|||| You may not have the latest drivers if you updated them from the Windows
|||| Update site instead of from nVidia.com's website. Afterwards, there are
|||| still other drivers and considerations to troubleshoot, Georgos, as follows:
||||
|||| Updating video card drivers can solve most gaming issues. Here's some
|||| simple abc's to always keep in mind. a. Shut off download accelerators,
|||| firewalls and antivirus programs when downloading or installing updates;
|||| b. Check for game patches: www.avault.com/pcrl/patches_list.asp?letter=a
|||| c. Make sure you meet the game's minimum video and system requirements;
|||| d. Check for known issues with your video card at the game's web site. :-)
||||
|||| 1. Before you update your drivers, I recommend that you update DirectX
|||| from: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/directx/default.aspx
||||
|||| Here are the steps I recommend you use to update your driver. If you've
|||| never done this before I recommend you also look over the Installation hints
|||| and Release Notes both of which are linked to from their download page.
||||
|||| 2. Download the latest drivers from: www.nvidia.com/content/drivers/drivers.asp
||||
|||| 3. Save the .exe driver in My Documents\My Drivers\nVidia
||||
|||| 4. Restart the computer in Safe Mode by pressing the F8 key
|||| about once every second as it's rebooting to pick Safe Mode.
||||
|||| 5. Click Start / (settings) Control Panel / System / Hardware
|||| Device Manager / expand +Display Adapters / right click on
|||| the adapter, pick "Uninstall", and click No if asked to reboot.
||||
|||| 6. Use Control Panel / Add-Remove programs to uninstall the
|||| previous driver (exe)software which may have been installed.
||||
|||| 7. Restart the computer in Safe Mode by pressing the F8 key
|||| about once every second as it's rebooting to pick Safe Mode.
||||
|||| 8. If Windows prompts you to install the adapter, click "Cancel".
||||
|||| 9. Double click the nVidia driver we saved to My Documents\My
|||| Drivers\nVidia folder in step 3 to install.it. If it complains about
|||| Windows Logo Certification just click "Continue". This is normal.
||||
|||| 10. After you reboot, go to Control Panel / Display / Settings and
|||| choose 32 bit Color Quality, and 800x600 or higher Resolution.
||||
|||| TROUBLESHOOTING:
||||
|||| Test your drivers using DXDiag: Click Start / Run / type: DXDIAG
|||| Click the "Test" buttons in the Display, Sound, Music & Network Tabs;
|||| If any of the Display options are Disabled and you cannot Enable them,
|||| your most likely solution would be to update your Chipset Drivers as per
|||| my website: http://www3.sympatico.ca/nibblesnbits/Video.html#v11
||||
|||| Your program might not support dual monitors, or "dual head" video cards
|||| You can disable the extra video output in your display properties control
|||| panel. Click Start>Settings>Control Panel>Display>Settings>Advanced.
||||
|||| Along with your Video card, Sound Cards, Motherboard Chipsets,
|||| and Video Monitors may also require updated drivers. Even your
|||| motherboard's BIOS may need to be updated for compatibility with
|||| your Video card. These steps are listed at: http://NibblesNbitsVideo.tk
||||
|||| Perhaps the old Nvidia drivers did not completely uninstall. If that's the
|||| case, use this utility to completely uninstall the drivers and go to step 7:
|||| http://content.guru3d.com/index.php?page=detonatorrip&menu=0
||||
|||| The latest video drivers sometime don't work with a particular game.
|||| (Check the Video suggestions in the readme.txt file in your game folder/CD)
|||| If there's no suggestions, try an older (WHQL) driver, and/or if you still
|||| experience problems try a Beta driver, or even an Omega driver instead:
||||
|||| BETA Drivers: http://download.guru3d.com/
|||| OMEGA Drivers: http://www.omegadrivers.net
||||
|||| There you have it, if you have any questions feel free to post them! :-)

today i am happy for 2 reasons ;-)
first is for i meet a fellow greek
and 2nd coz i think i made my system work again (playing cronicles of Riddik
without my system get crash or the game itself either) i have to try the
other 2 games also to verify full success.
i have followed all your steps jimmy plus yesterday i read a post that i
think it helped me also and is the following:

I have a new Dell Optiplex GX620, Pentium-D, 2.8 Ghz, 1GB RAM, XP-Pro.
Display adapter is integrated Intel 82945G chipset. Direct-X 9.0c. I've
installed two games (Rise of Nations, Age of Empires) I used on my
previous
system. Both games cause system crash (reboot) 20 to 90 seconds after
gameplay starts. Video trailers and menus at start of games run OK;
problem
occurs only after start of gameplay. Microsoft Game Advisor indicates
both
games are compatible with my system. All drivers are latest shown on Dell
and Intel websites. System passes DXDIAG tests. Dell can't (won't) help.
My initial thought was video hardware, but I'm now wondering about the
Pentium-D. Anyone have any ideas?

It's probably more likely to be the video hardware rather than the CPU.

First thing would be to check in the Event Log in Admin Tools in the Control
Panel see if you can find any errors that match up. If not.

Second thing to do do troubleshoot it would be to stop the system from
automatically rebooting - so we can get an error screen.

You can do this by right-clicking My Computer then selecting Properties,
then go to Advanced and Startup and Recovery settings, uncheck Automatically
restart. Next time it crashes it should present you with a blue-screen, jot
down any error codes and files (usually ending with .dll).

Post back here with the error details and we can work out what's causing it.

Paul Smith,

since i made this step and after rebboting my system the system no longer
crashes
but also the game.
I also changed the ingame refresh from 85hz to 75hz because i had already
did the same step in my desktop and reconfigure my sppedfan sensors. now the
intications in cpu temperature are from 36c to 45c max.
i hope that post may help another people with the same problem
and thnx again for your help.
Hope to see you and your family back again some day in Greece :D Cheers
