games and 9800

just got a new PC. 3.2GHz P4 with 1 GB Ram , 200 GB Harddrive and 9800
graphics card running windows XP through a 19" TFT monitor. it runs some
games fine but others such as battlefield 1942 install and allow you to
setup a character etc.. but when it goes to the game screen everything turns
black and the games seem to be running in the background but not on the
monitor.
Any ideas? drivers etc... seem to be up-to-date and I have sp2 installed.
why only on certain games and not all them.

Maybe that's the problem.Don't know this for sure though.
 
I have a 9800 pro and XP with SP2 and my games run fine.
P4 2.6 1 gig of memory and the latest Omega drivers based on the 4.9 ATI
drivers.

it turns out that instead of a 9800 (or Pro) it turns out to be an SE which
refuses to run any games worth a damn. it'll run simple Microsoft games but
real 3D games refuse to run. I contacted the supplier and they say it's not
their problem it's Acer's and with the small print they can. I have spent as
long as I can on the phone but never get to the person only their answering
machine.

I have a good mind to return as it's not what I wanted. I had an old Athlon
1000 with a GF3Ti and it ran virtually everything even if it was a little
slow.
now I have a 1Gb Ram P4 3.2GHz computer that'll run only app and no games.

I was under the impression a 9800SE would be about as quick as a 9600 pro?
Even if it is a cut down card it should still run 3D apps.
Have you run DXDIAG, and installed latest drivers?
