Hi guys,

What kind of Adapter do I need if my Joystick has a gameport but my
motherboard doesn't? Is there some kin of Adapter from gameport to USB?

Any links?

Thanks a lot.

Have a nice day.

Hi Freiburg Peter,

You can find Gameport to USB adapters at your local Mall,
or some people install a cheap soundcard with a Gameport
however I don't recommend either of those methods.

First you're not guaranteed that the game controller will be
detected and function properly. Force feedback support
of course is not possible when using a converter.

Lastly, it only costs a few dollars more for a USB joystick.
The hassle and fuss just isn't worth it to try and hang on to
the old stick. That's just my opinion, the choice is yours. :-)

I have the adapter, from Nexxtech (retailed by "The Source" or the old Radio
Shack outfit in Canada). It is called USB Gameport Adapter product number
2600164. But there's a caveat. It needs no drivers but you do have to find
the HID game controller device in the list of game controllers set out within
Control Panel -- in order to set up and configure the device. I don't find
it there even though Windows finds the new hardware and installs two devices,
one a HID and the other a USB adapter. So I have been searching the
Microsoft knowledge base to find the issue but have been unsuccessful yet.

Be aware that some game port controllers are NOT compatible with many of
the game port to USB adapters. Sometimes those incompatible controllers
are marked "Digital" on their packaging or in promotional material. At
one time some of these devices came with a special compatible USB
adapter. Force Feedback controllers are definitely digital. Unless your
controller has some specialized functions it's often better and just as
economical to just replace it with a USB unit.
