Game Server ideas?

I'm thinking about building an internet gaming server for a FP Shooter
game I'm involved in. When I get my income tax refund back, my
savings will be at about 2k. Any thoughts about what system you'd
build in this situation?

Methinks the counter strike group(s) would be a good starting
place for you to ask.

i run a hl2 server from home on a very modest system. its a sempron 2200,
512mb ram and a 40gig hdd. you don`t need a powerful pc to run a server, all
the works is done by the client machines really. what you need is a fast dsl
connection with as much upload as you can get. i have 256k upload which gets
me 6 players in hl2:dm with a bit of lag.
