Tom

I have a computer with Pentium 4 2.02 ghz, 256mb ram 80gb
hard drive, geforcemx440 64mb video card and however
games running at 1024 resolution with high settings are
running lower than 20 frames per second. Another thing I
notice is in the task manager, i see that 27 applications
are running at the same time, half of them i dont even
know. I have downloaded the latest driver for my video
card and have defragmented the computer, however the
speed does not pick up whatsoever. I have never had this
problem before. What would be the best advice, should I
re-install windows?

Tom, Windows XP does a whole lot under the hood so to speak. You can find
out what is running that isn't essential by going to Start/Run and typing in
"msconfig" without the quotes and then clicking the OK button.

Then go to the Services tab and down at the bottom put a check mark in Hide
All Microsoft Services. This will instantly tell you what's running that
isn't "system" in nature. Please do not follow the advise on a couple web
sites and a recent magazine article about turning off any Services. They
mess a whole lot of things up, including the ability to install programs.

Did your computer just start slowing down or has it always been slow, it's
hard to tell from your post.
Best advice I can give you is to get a different video card, geforce 4 mx is
really bad, it is slower than a
geforce 2 I understand, the other geforce 4s are ok though (4200, 4400,
4600), for best performace, I'd
recommend an ati 9700 or ati 9800 or nvidia 5600 or 5900. Perhaps you should
search for some card reviews,
a good place to start is google.com, rage3d.com, and nvnews.net

It has only been recently, and I have never experienced
this slow down until just now.

Which games? Have you lowered video settings (for instance) in the games?

27 *applications* or 27 *processes?* The two are different.

Have you downloaded the DirectX 9.0b? it is a DirectX
made specifically for XP and corrects a lot of problems i
have noticed. my XP Pc used to be good enough running on
DirectX 9 for 98/2000 but then i downloaded 9.0b and WOW!
it made a difference, quite a big differemce actually
