Can anyone tell me why certain games shut my computer completely off, after
about 20 minutes of play and what I can do to correct it? I have Windows XP
Home Edition. I have no idea what the problem is. Thank you for your help
in advance.

Hi Grandmom56,

Which games are affecting your system in this manner?
Does your computer restart afterwards automatically?
If so ... To stop this behavior go to Control Panel / System / Advanced /
Click the Startup and Recovery Settings button / Uncheck the box
labelled "Automatically restart" under the System Failure section.

To analyze the error, try the steps in: http://aumha.org/win5/kbestop.htm

If the error indicates a file name that begins with ati, or nv (nVidia)
the most likely solution would be to install the latest drivers using
the instructions at: http://mvps.org/nibblesnbits/Video.html#drivers

Right click on "My computer"

Click "Properties" on resulting context menu

Click "Advanced" tab

Click "Settings" button in "Startup and Recovery" section

Uncheck "Automatically restart" in the System failure" section

Click "OK" button to close "Startup and Recovery" and "system
Properties" dialogs

Include any error messages that are displayed when the computer shuts
down with any further inquiries.

Scan for malware including virus adware and spyware scans

If running games still results in shutdowns without the display of error
messages obtain temperature monitoring software to see if your CPU or
graphics accelerator are overheating. Search the disks that came with
your computer or your computer manufacturer's customer support web site
for temperature monitoring software.

Jimmy,
The games are Monopoly Tycoon, and Pet Vet Paws and Claws. The computer does
not restart automatically as the power shuts clear off, and to restart it, I
have to disconnect the power source for about 20 seconds, the turn the power
back on, and start the computer. I went to the web site you had posted and
saw that a CD burning program by Roxio has caused some trouble. My husband
installed Roxio Easy CD and DVD on our computer here while back. We
uninstalled it the other day, but the problem still exsists. What do you
think?

Hi Grandmom56,

Hardware issues can cause freezing, black screens and other
errors. Also, your drivers should always be kept up to date.

Try the following steps one at a time to try and resolve the issue.
I hope this helps. Please post back if you have any questions! :-)

1. Update DirectX and your Chipset, Sound, &Video Drivers:
For all Video / DirectX / Game and Hardware Issues, I have a
Checklist of Solutions at: http://NibblesNbitsVideo.tk

2. Dust your fans, vents and components using a 1/4" paintbrush
and a hose vacuum. Use compressed air for hard to reach places.
Set a housefan to blow cold air into your case to expose an over-
heating issue.. If it works add more fans or replace defective ones.
Use this Motherboard Monitor Utility: http://mbm.livewiredev.com

3. A faulty power supply can cause STOP errors, random reboots,
and black screen lockups. One way to test for that is to check the
wattage sticker on your power supply and then calculate your need
http://www.jscustompcs.com/power_supply/ (Min. 350 for gaming)

4. Test your RAM using: http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp

Jimmy,
My adapter is a Radeon 9000. When I went to the new driver website, it took
me to the Catalyst 6.11 driver. In the release notice it shows what this
driver supports, and the Radeon 9000 is not listed there. Does that mean I
can't use it on my computer?

Hi Grandmom56,

I agree that the 9000 is not listed in the release notes, however
when selecting to download a Windows XP driver for the 9000
it brings us directly to this page, so it *should* be compatible.

Hello!
I had the same problem in some of the game sites and it turned out to be on
their end. It was in the timing actualy. Whenever they do downloads/updates
it causes those types of problems, such as your having. If it is a home game
then I am sorry, Maybe too much running at one time.

I am Canadian!
