Hi,

Just try it, quite often they will simply work. If not, click
start/programs/accessories and try using compatibility mode for Win95 to
install and run it. If it is still failing, you may want to check with the
program vendor for any needed patches or updates. A lot of software will run
without further ado, but some simply will not (particularly older software
that made direct calls to system hardware). All you can do is try.

By the way, instead of dual booting, you can always use a virtual pc
program. Here you could create a Win95 installation within your WinXP system
and run the software within that environment. There are several good
software packages available including Microsoft's Virtual PC as well as
third party products like VMWare.

What game? It depends entrely on which it is.

Some older games will run under Windows XP without doing anything special,
some will run if only you run them in compatility mode, others won't run at
all.

If the game tries to access the hardware directly (as many older games did)
it won't run at all under Windows XP.

The game is Command and Conquer, Red Alert. After running the compatibility
wizard, I was able to install it, but then when I tried to run it, I got the
following message: " The procedure entry point SMapLS_IP_EBP_12 could not be
located in the dynamic link library KERNEL32.dll" Does this mean that maybe
it is one of the games that makes direct calls to system hardware?

Sorry, I don't know anything about this game, but now that you've identified
it, someone else here may be able to help.

Command and Conquer Red Alert will not run in XP.. however, were you to
purchase Red Alert 2, a graphically superior game, encompassing way more
strategy, you would have no problems at all..

I am still looking to find somebody who has Win 95 and a desire to play
antiquated strategy games..

Actually I have Command and Conquer Red Alert installed on my XP machine. I
agree that Red Alert 2 is a superior game, but there are some who still like
the older one. Here's detailed instructions for installing C&C Red Alert.
Follow them closely.

Here are the steps needed for installing Red Alert on Windows XP :

a.. You must have Administrator Rights on Windows XP in order to install
Red Alert. This is a Win2000 and Windows XP setting. Please contact your
system administrator or Microsoft for instructions on setting your
administrator privileges.

a.. To find out if you are logged in as the Admin follow the following
steps:
1.. Click on the Start button.
2.. Click on Settings.
3.. Then click on Control Panel
4.. Select User Accounts. Under the user tab you should see the user
name as Administrator.

b.. To install the game follow these steps:
1.. Insert the Red Alert disk into the CD-ROM drive. Close the
installation window that appears if Autoplay is turned on.
2.. Click on the My Computer icon.
3.. Right click on the CD-ROM Drive with the game in it.
4.. In the drop down menu, select explore.
5.. Find the folder called Setup95. Double click on it to open the
folder.
6.. Inside that folder find the file called install.exe.
7.. Right click on install.exe. Select send to.. then desktop, from the
drop down menu.
8.. This will create a shortcut on the desktop. Right click on that
shortcut and select properties.
9.. Select the Compatibility tab.
10.. Check the Run this program in compatibility mode for: box.
11.. Then select Windows 95 in the drop down window below.
12.. Click Apply then OK.
13.. Double click on the shortcut to install the game.

c.. In order for the game to run properly you must install the latest
patch.
1.. Locate the latest patch on our FTP site.
a.. Click here to go to the latest Red Alert patch.
2.. Drag the patch to your desktop.
3.. After completing the download, copy the patch file into the Red
Alert installation directory, by default this is located at
C:\Westwood\RedAlert
4.. Double click on the patch to run the patch file, this will create
three more files - Patch.exe, Patch.r

Blair

I do have the game, and will admit to not getting it to run.. after
installing it onto a Win 98 machine, I completely lost the urge to go any
further re. installing on XP..

The game has less playability than some of the real oldies like Pong or
Pac-Man, in my opinion..

Oops the instructions I sent were incomplete, so sorry. Here they are
complete.
