you could use less thumbnails. you could also just lose the theme and set
the font with .css etc. I noticed a huge amount of extraneous font tags and
the like in your source code. I clicked a few pictures and found the
thumbnails to be around 5K which isn't too bad but you could probably cut it
down by 20% or more without hurting image quality (they're thumbnails
anyway).
what application did you use to make the gallery?

When I saw how many photos were on the page, I allowed it a smidgeon more
time (and patience). I still use a dial-up so I don't think it was too bad.

Split the page into two pages.

I might have to resort to that but was hoping to avoid it because the "gallery"
leads into a "slideshow" and it just seemed more "friendly" to have the one
gallery. That probably doesn't matter though. I'm still working out all the
navigation and reading through old posts in this newgroup to figure out some
other problems. A person had suggested that I move all the images out of
sub-folders & into the main image folder. Did that & now the javascripts need
reworking. Oh well! Thanks again for the help. I REALLY like Frontpage. It is
a great program and this newsgroup is a wonderful source for answers.

Thanks JoAnn! (I like your sig!)

Something to keep in mind is that your
homepage opens quite fast.
Once people have "entered" your site
and decide to click a link to another part
of your site they will be much more tolerant
of a page that loads a little slow.
To me, the page that needs to load fast is the
homepage, and that you have accomplished.

This is encouraging. Thanks for your feedback!

if you want go to www.bradsoft.com and download the free trial of topstyle.
it's got a function that will strip out font tags and inline styles. you
don't have to put a theme on a page to use the theme's menu! I thought that
was kind of cool when I first found out.
I didn't think the page was too slow. what does frontpage's built in thingy
tell you? (lower right side of your window)
The pictures are really fantastic by the way. I especially liked Asian
Madonna.

btw if a viewer doesn't have papyrus they're not going to see that font
anyway.

Your page load time really isn't too bad on modem. I too
gave you a little more time for the number of images. If
you don't want to split the images across two pages then
start with resizing caterpiller.jpg (~30K) to produce a
true thumbnail. It's uploaded size is too large. Getting it
down around the size of the other thumbnails will save you
at least 25K right away.

The rest of your thumnail file sizes seem reasonable (under
5K) but you could probably compress them more still. Use
the lowest quality setting (highest compression rate) if
your graphic editor gives you a choice. As someone else
said they're just thumbnails and quality isn't a high
priority.

You might consider using an image preloading script and
preload a few of these on some of your other "light" pages.
That way there'll be a chance that the images are already
in the visitors cache before they hit the photo page. If
your index page weight iasn't too heavy, that can be a good
place to preload a few since most visitors will come from
there.
