GAIN and CoolWebSearch

Believe Weatherbug is the one that they are referring to.
There was an announcement to that effect a month or so
ago. There was a thread on the forum about it. Most of
us weren't too happy about that. I still kill it on any
of my company PCs and flag it on my emails.

AntiSpy kills gator quite easly but I don't think it's
smart enough to get rid of CoolWebSearch or its cousin
About:Blank. Don't think it's because they don't want to -
just don't know how.

From Chuck about Cool Web Search:
CoolWebSearch is a constantly mutating major nuisance. The best tool to
diagnose it is HijackThis, and expert advice. HijackThis shows all possible
traces of software, anything that MIGHT be malware, and lets an expert
identify the bad stuff manually.

HijackThis http://www.tomcoyote.com/hjt/

Create a separate folder for HijackThis, such as C:\HijackThis - copy the
downloaded file there.

Then, run HijackThis ("Scan"). Do NOT make any changes immediately. Save
the HJT Log.

Finally, have your HJT log interpreted by experts at one or more of the
following security forums (and please post a link to your forum posts,

The reference is pretty oblique. Microsoft has certainly not "backed down"
in the case of either GAIN or CoolWebSearch.

I've looked at recent GAIN products, and they are trying hard to be
compliant--they've got a clear eula, their ads state clearly what is
generating them, and the removal is clear in add or remove programs. They
are still listed though, and I hope will continue to be, until every one of
the older nastier versions is cleaned up!

Like others, I think the article reference may be to Weatherbug. I don't
see this as a big issue, but I also don't think much of Weatherbug, and
recommend alternative apps for that purpose.

Thx to all who replied. Much appreciated.
