Many thanks for any help!

I was referring to the feature that reserves the space for the gadgets,
regardless of what else you might be running, such as Internet Explorer.
I have a 17" screen on this laptop and don't need that much space on any of
my applications. Besides, if the space is reserved for gadgets, I can ALWAYS
see the clock, calendar, etc. Guess I just didn't make myself clear. Many
thanks, Russ -- nice try.

Actually, Russ is right. His try was more than just nice, it was correct.
The Sidebar is gone, but the gadgets happily reside on the desktop anyway.
I put my gadgets in the same area where the Sidebar used to sit. YMMV.
