D/L with out problem:
Definition 1.14.1288.5

Hi Bill,

This is the way how I spot the updates:
Since I'm using a dialup
I have the Windows automatic updater turned on
With the option "Notify me but don't automatically download or install them.
Is easy for me in this way.

Thanks - I tried out that setting at one point, but then went back to
automatic--It is useful to have the heads up, sometimes. I don't see new
"can't update" messages for this round, so far.

I repented of my sins and went back (again) to beta 2 and this update is in
a loop with the new update. Download, install, download. Repeat process.
Bummer

I see your reference to the Windows Installer Clean-up utility. Do you mean
that if I uninstall Windows Defender installer that the updates might finally
install? Or are other installers interfering with the Windows Defender
installer? The update listed in the subject line is the only one showing up
when I do Microsoft Updates.

I tried checking "notify me" but now I am just like a dog chasing my tail.
First it installs then it tells me updates are ready to download. And it
tells me about the same update that I supposedly just installed.

What gives? Please tell me what is going on. And does this one in the
subject line incorporate some of the other updates or did the first ones
finally install somehow?

I had the same problem with Windows XP updates and finally I don't get
messages any more but I don't know what has caused the resolution. Strange
but true.

This is how I "view" what's happening. I'm not at all sure it is
technically accurate, but as a world view, it seems to allow me to get along
OK.

I believe that the current update is incompletely installed. Neither
Windows Update nor AutoUpdate see it as complete, and thus continue to offer
it.

The fix is to remove what is now (incompletely) in place.

I can imagine at least 3 ways to do that.

The standard two are:

1) KB article 915105.

2) Using Windows Installer Cleanup tool, remove: Windows Defender
Signatures.

3) (not yet tested)--using System Restore. A new restore point is set up
for each Signature installation--it is labelled: "Software Distribution
Service 2.0."

Once the current incomplete install is removed, attempt updating via both
Windows Update and AutoUpdate. At this point the update should complete
properly--it is interesting to note that it appears that this does always
succeed.

The issue can come back on a succeeding update, however.

As I say--I'm not at all sure this is a technically accurate view of what is
happening, but as a working hypothesis, the actions suggested (at least 1
and 2) seem to take care of it--so that's how I'm continuing to view it for
the time being.
