OS: Windows 2000 Professional

Accessing files on the network is slow while MS AntiSyware
running. Disabling (disable real time protection) it
solves the problem.

If you disable real time protection on your antivirus, instead of on
Microsoft Antispyware, is the effect the same?

(I've seen one report that a spyware scan was dramatically slowed by an
interaction with the particular antivirus on that machine.)

Have you tried System Properties->Advanced->Performance Options, and ticking
"Background services"? There used to be a way to say "This machine is
primarily a fileserver" but that may have been with NT 4.

I had Norton Antivirus get in my face with a real time Virus alert in the
middle of an AdAware Scan. You do one kind of scan and get the other one
along for the ride.
