FX51 Motherboard recommendation

I have a AMD FX51 with a Asus SK8N motherboard and 1GB of the
registered RAM for it. My motherboard has always had a problem with
the BIOS holding the settings. Replaced the battery and it still died
off quickly. So I must have a short... Anyway I was wondering if
anyone has a recommendation on a new motherboard that can be found
easily. Most SK8N's that pop up on ebay are either overseas or busted.
There's also the Gigabyte GA-K8NNXP-940. Any others out there? I
plan on upgrading to newer hardware but would like to reuse the
Processor/RAM if I can for another box (hate to have to reset it after
a power outage).

Also can FX51's be run in a dual CPU set up?

Thanks!

The Athlon 64 is for single chip systems, Opteron's are for multi chip
systems. The A64 X2s are dual core but that's not relevant to your problem
since you already have a the FX51.

Is the FX51 a socket 940? If it is you'll have to look for an Opteron
motherboard. The current A64 motherboards are for socket AM2, there are
also still plenty of motherboards for socket 939. If your FX51 is socket
940 I wouldn't bother buying a new motherboard for it, an Opteron
motherboard is more expensive then AM2 motherboard. For about the same
amount or more you could buy a socket AM2 motherboard and a new socket AM2
A64. Spend a little more and you can get a dual core AM2 which would make
it a worthwhile upgrade.

Thanks for the advice on that. I'll just hang on to it and wait on
ebay. Just wanted to have an extra machine after I upgraded to a
faster system. If I could get a used one cheap then I would be happy.
The FX51 has been good and I can't see pitching it when it still has
some life left.

Thanks!

That sounds reasonable to me,if you can get one for $50-75 on E-Bay then
it's worth doing. What you don't want to do is buy a $250 motherboard for
and old processor when you could get a new motherboard for half as much
and have enough left over for a new processor.

No. Personally, I'd dump the MB and put the cpu on ebay. Someone might buy
it. But if you want to throw good money after bad, here's a board for you,
but only 14 hrs left and no telling what the end price is going to be.

Another reasonable option would be toi send your current board in for
repair. You might get it repaired for $50 or less. Contact Asus.

I've been following this thread. I also have an FX-51 with the ASUS SK8N
motherboard. I've been thinking about upgrading, but I'm not sure if I
should be patient and see what AMD comes out with in January, 2007. Of
course, there will always be something new to burn money on. If I'm honest
with myself, my FX-51 is still meeting my needs ok. But, I was wondering if
you guys had any thoughts on upgrading. Would it be better to wait or would
there be any benefit to upgrading? Definitely not to the most extreme chip,
of course, but any of the cheaper ones? Intel/AMD? I basically just play
some games and keep a lot of my wife's music with a little video editing
thrown in. I have to say, the FX-51 is getting a little sluggish...
(rationalizing, rationalizing...)

Rarely do people really need to upgrade, but I just upgraded from an A64
S754 3000+ to an AM2 X2 3800+. Didn't really need to but performance is a
lot better. I really wanted to go with the Intel Core 2 Duo, but I
couldn't find a board with 4 PCI slots and the prices of the new CPU's are
still artficially high and I didn't want to wait. And the fact I really
don't need the fastest cpu in the world also played a big part. I would
never buy top of the line. The premium price is just way out of hand and
it's just plaon stupid to me to pay $800 for a cpu that's only 5% faster
than one that only cost $150. if you want to upgrade, at this time, I'd
look at the Intel Core 2 Duo E6300 and the AMD X2 3800+ and decide Unless
you're just loaded and then just buy the top of the Line Core 2 Duo.:-)
