It would be better if this ran as a service so it can
perform scheduled scans and updates even when the desktop
is not logged on to.

In a business environment, many desktops are required to
be logged off at the end of the day, making the software
non-functional except for real time scanning.

Or at least make it smart enough to know it has not been
able to run its scheduled updates and run them the next
time the desktop is logged on to.

I guess such features would be provided by the Enterprise Edition and use of
Administrative tools on a Windows Server such as Group Policy Editor and
MMC. For single user, I think just scheduling scan should be enough when the
computer is not in use.
