I figured out it's because both machines are running Norton Personal
Firewall. If I turn the firewall off they can each ping each over. I went
into Configure for the firewall for each of them and told them that the
other was a trusted connection but it didn't help. I still can't ping each
other while the firewall is on.

Hi William,

I would recommend contacting Norton (if no response from here of course) to
see if they can explain what they mean when they indicate a 'trusted
connection'. It's possible that they don't allow ICMP (the protocol used
by ping) with that configuration. There may be another way to allow that.

I had exactly the same problem at a customer's site yesterday,
William. I tried every option that I could find for defining the LAN
as a trusted zone, but nothing that I did could convince Norton to
allow pings from the local area network when the firewall was enabled.
The computer couldn't even ping itself.

I'll post a follow-up message if I find a solution.
