Thank you Russ Valentine for your quick answer to my
question below. I'm doing a new post because I'm not sure
if you'd see this question as a reply to the earlier
question.

On my Win98 SE system, with Outlook 2000 I navigated to:

C:\Windows\Local Settings\Application
Data\Microsoft\Outlook.

In this folder I found three files:

outlook.pst , extend.dat , and backup.pst

The backup file is probably the one I created by
exporting. I believe the outlook.pst is the file I want.
To be sure I'm clear on this......... I would just burn
outlook.pst to a cd. This will have all of the current
inbox messages and all my contacts, all well as all the
other stuff......journal etc. that I don't currently use.
I don't have very many customized settings, so I don't
mind having the defaults for most stuff.

Once I've reinstalled Outlook and recreated the mail
settings, (Does the export account information work at
all?) all I need to do is copy the outlook.pst file to the
same location, and replace the existing outlook.pst file
with the one from the cd and I'll get everything back. Is
this right?

Again, thanks for your help.

Not quite.
What you'll need to do is copy the PST file from your CD to your hard drive
and remove the read only attribute it acquired from being on a CD. Make sure
you remember the name and location of this PST file.
Absolutely do NOT overwrite another PST file.
Instead, simply configure your new installation to use your previous PST
file. The method will depend on which mail support mode of Outlook 2000 you
are using and whether your new installation has already configured itself
with a new PST file.
To use another PST file (such as the one from your earlier installation) and
set it to be the default for your current installation of Outlook, you will
first need to know the location and name of the PST file you'd like to use
as your new default. Then use the following directions, depending on version
and mode of Outlook:

Corporate Mode: (With Outlook closed)
- Control Panel > Mail applet
- Remove the current Personal Folder service
- Readd the service, directing it to the new PST file location
- Restart Outlook

Internet Mail Only mode:
- File menu > Open > Personal Folders file > migrate to the new PST file
location to open it
- Right-click on the root of the new set of folders in the folder pane (View
Folder List)
- Choose Properties
- Check the "Deliver POP mail" box
- Quit & restart Outlook
- Now you can Close the PST file that you were previously using (R-click on
that pst folder while in Folder View and select "Close <foldername>
Folders"). If you have any information in your former PST that you'd like to
transfer to your new default PST, you can drag and drop from one to the
other before you close the old one.
