Blankin ms dos, ther is a command you can use, you type in edit, and it
brins up an area where you can edit the coding of programs. i want to
fiddle with the code of explorer.exe and save the changes. i can not do
that from a command prompt or any windows progam because explorer is already
running making the file read only. in previous versions, you just booted to
dos and ran edit. i am wondering how to accomplish this on XP.

Since Windows XP is not based on DOS, you cannot 'boot to DOS' the way you
could with earlier versions of Windows.

Open your command prompt (or any hex editor) and then use Task Manager to kill explorer. Your start
button, task bar, desktop will disappear but open programs will still function. You can restart
explorer from task manager (DON'T CLOSE IT!) once you are done editing.
