On the 2000 machine your saying that the timings did not work at all. In the presentation that you prepared using the 2003 version of PowerPoint, did you go into tools, Options, Edit, and Disable new features? Timings in PowerPoint are not the greatest feature in any version.

well, i am using powerpoint 2003 and i need to use it on another computer
with powerpoint 2000, i now that some animations will not work however when
setting the timings for the slides it is fine on the 03 version and then just
skips through on the 2000 version the funny thing is i have done this before
You will have to be a little more specific re the versions of PowerPoint your working with. If your trying to do something in one version that is not in the earlier version definitely won't work.
