Neil, the funny sidebar thing is the new common tasks pane. It is designed
for use in viewing folders. It is not normally a part of the desktop. It
was an accident (incorrect registry key) that it appeared on your desktop.

it was vertical on the right, cream coloured and could be

it, plus my documents.

Hi,

Exactly where on the right hand side (horizontal or vertical)? Either way,
this is not by default. The common tasks bar is always on the left, so that
is out. Can you give a bit more of a description?

Neil, sorry I got my left and right mixed up on my previous answer. :) This
descriptions sounds like the My Computer toolbar. When first invoked,
toolbars appear on the taskbar but can be moved to the edge of the desktop
or placed in the center if you prefer.

Two ways to get that toolbar back:
1) Open Windows Explorer. Drag and Drop "My Computer" at the very edge of
the monitor.

2) Right click the taskbar, select Toolbars> My Computer. With the taskbar
unlocked, grab the handle of the resulting toolbar and drag it to the edge
of the desktop. Drop it in place and the toolbar should appear.

Once you have the toolbar in place, you can right click in a blank spot
withn its boundaries and work with the preferences which include
AutoHide/Keep On Top, Show/hide labels, etc.

MANY MANY thanks Sharon.
Simple answer, i feel stupid but very pleased. thank you!
