Funky Publishing Problem

Here's the issue we are having. We currently have FrontPage 2003 installed
on a laptop computer with wireless connation to the internet.

We are having issues publishing to a networked external harddrive that is
attached to a deskpc through a USB port.

We use to be able to publish to this shared external disk in the past
without problems. Now, whenever we try to publish to the disk, our wireless
internet connection starts to drop off in terms of speed and then completely
disconnects.

What's weird is, we can publish to the server using the radio button for
FrontPage Shared point services without any problems. The connection stays
at or around 54Mbps and the publishing finishes.

However, once we go to a file based publish, it just screws with the
wireless connection and drops the connection after several minutes.

Outside of FrontPage, we can copy, move do everything a normal file can do
between the laptop and the external harddrive.

So, my question is, what could be causing this issue and is there a solution
for it?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Do any files at all get published to the hard drive??

I assume you are publishing to the hard drive as a "disk based web"

No files get published. and yes it is being published as a disked based web.

The publishing web address just says "listing pages (address to disk based
location here).

Then an error message appears saying cannot connect to web site. This
happens, as the wireless connection is bottled up very low on connection
speed.

I have had a similar problem with my laptop since using wireless to connect
to the internet. When I try and connect to my web server nothing happens, the
hourglass just sits there and the website files never load. It seems like
Front Page doesn't recognize that the laptop is connected wirelessly.
Hopefully someone who sees this will know what the workaround is for this
problem.

We'll I must say, we have been using our wireless laptop for over a year
publishing to the server and the disk based web. Just recently, we started
having these troubles with the disked based web only. All other functions
with the wireless network work without a problem.

Therefore, I think it might have something to do with the latest security
patch that microsoft issue. As this is when all this started to happen. We
cannot roll back and see if that was the case, but maybe someone within
microsoft will see this and try it out.

On both PCs check your firewall settings
(make sure FP is allowed as an exception in Windows Security)

Both PCs have the FP as an exception in the windows firewall.

Now we get this error:
Server error: Cannot open file \\Location to networked
drive\vti_pvt\service.lck for reading.

What steps should we take next?

Actaully, we did a KB from microsoft about the service.lck file and did
delete it from the networked drive.

However, we can now start to publish again and files do start to copy over
to the network drive, but the wireless connection starts to faulter againa
and we loose the network connection to the disked based web. We are very
stumped as to why this just started to happen only on the disked based web.

So, we went a step further and tried to publish to a new directory on this
networked drive. Same thing happens. So we are completely out of things to
try I think, unless there something else we need to look at.

My connection problem was solved by switching off my Norton Firewall and
using teh windows firewall. I wil look at teh Norton settings when I get time
to see how to allow Frontpage through. But for now it is working. Thanks for
the suggestions!
