I have a computer with 1.0GB of memory and 200GB on the hard drive
which I bought about a year ago. It runs on Windows XP media center.

About a month ago I upgraded to Explorer 7.0 and I really like its new
features. About a week ago I upgraded my Norton Internet Security
program.

I can't remember whether it was before or after I upgraded to Norton
but whenever I've worked on my computer for a while, Explorer as well
as other programs just stop working properly; with Explorer it is hard
to get the links to work and right-clicking functions don't even
appear; with word processing (MS Works and MS Word) I can't even get
files to open.

Yet when I reboot the computer everything goes back to normal....until
I've worked for several hours and the problem then comes back.

Anyone have any idea what is the culprit and, if so, what I can do to
correct the problem?

I thank you in advance for your attention to these concerns...

1. By "Explorer" do you mean Internet Explorer or Windows Explorer?
2. Does Symantec support your version of Norton with IE7?

Internet Explorer

I don't know...how would I find out?

Go to the Symantec Web site.

I don't allow anything from Norton or McAfee into the building. The leasr
of their problems is slowing things down when they don't do worse.

Well, I'm at the point that I may drop Norton.

But what's the alternative? I've always had Norton as protection for
viruses, firewall, etc.

Any suggestions? Does what comes with Windows work as well?

AVG and Avast are free. I use AVG but I'm told Avast is better. NOD32 is
even better but it's not free.

I use and recommend the Windows Firewall.

I run Windows Defender (free from Microsoft) and scan with Ad-Aware and
Spybot S&D regularly.

The anti-virus should check for updates daily and the resident anti-spyware
should do the same. The anti-spyware programs that are just used for a
regular scan should be updated before each scan.

All this updating is necessary because the jerks who get their kicks from
writing this stuff keep letting new ones out.

Someone on a symantec newsgroup suggested that I go to Tools, Interent
Options, Custom Level and then change the scripting settings to
enabled. This person said it solved the same problem I had but didn't
know the repercussions of it.

If I enabled the scripting settings, do you know what the
repercussions are?
