I've been having a few problems recently with certain
items in websites not functioning, and windows update
gradually failing (worked at first, then would scan but
say no updates available, now IE freezes before the scan
can start)

A previous posting (21st july 11.13am)was answered by
Robert Aldwinckle with a link to a KB article for
reregistering dll files. This procedure didn't solve the
problem. He also suggested repairing IE from control
panel/add or remove programs.

The problem now however is that IE doesn't appear in that
list, though I distinctly remember seeing it there a
couple of days ago.

Has anyone any suggestions as to what is going on?? - IE
seems to be gradually shutting things down day by day.

Most of the problems seem to have occurred since
downloading an IE update last week, though as this doesn't
appear in the installation list or add/remove programs, I
can neither remove it nor remember exactly which one it
was. Sytem restores going back up to 2 months have failed
to resolve it as well.

Are there any known issues with any recent IE updates?

running xp pro sp2

running xp pro sp2

So you have solved at least one of your previous issues? <eg>

How did you install that?

4. windows update will no longer work (it was okay last
week) when I click "scan for updates", at first it would
say that none are available (I know there are) and now it
just says "scanning" and freezes on 0% -I can't even close
the window without using task manager.

Do you realize that with XPsp2 you will now be using a beta version
of V5 WindowsUpdate?

IE6 is not an installable component of XP.
What you may have been looking at is the 0.0 MB Windows component
which unfortunately is called Internet Explorer but whose
description makes very clear what it adds when selected:
<Description>
Adds or removes access to Internet Explorer from the Start menu
and Desktop
</Description>

Another easy mistake to make in Add or Remove Programs
is not to check: Show Updates if you are expecting to see updates.

BTW in case it wasn't clear you can only do an IE Repair if you have
module setupwbv.dll. The only way that I know of for that to happen
is to have installed IE6sp1 separately *before* updating XP to XPsp1.

<quote>
If you installed IE6sp1 before you upgraded to XPsp1
believe it or not you can try an IE Repair via the Run... dialog:

rundll32 setupwbv.dll,IE6Maintenance

Your problem description is very vague and it is especially difficult
trying to understand if you are describing missing things which you
imagine might exist or if you are actually seeing things which may be
wrong.

Try another newsgroup?
