function using cells from multiple worksheets

I have four worksheets saved under one name. I need to
average a cell from each worksheet.
I've tried everything-can't get it to work

Can you post an example of something you tried?

Did you try something like
=AVERAGE(Sheet2!A1,Sheet3!A1,Sheet4!A1,Sheet5!A1)
???

Yes I tried =average(sheet1!:sheet4!,Q3)
is that the same?

Seriously, this is one (other) reason I believe that default behaviour for
inserting sheets should be to the right of current tab. But that's just me.
