I am wondering if somewhere in the world there is a comprehensive diagram for the function keys within Word...

Can anybody direct me?

You may be able to buy some sort of Function Key overlay template, but I'm
not aware of where or how. If you want to get a listing of all keyboard
shortcuts, try this:

Click "Tools" menu, select "Macro", "Macros". In the "Macros in" dropdown,
select "Word Commands". In the "Macro Names" list box, select "List
Commands" and click the "Run" button. Word will make you a table of all the
present keyboard shortcuts, which you can sort, delete unneeded ones, etc.

Checkout Word help for 'Keyboard shortcuts' All the standard key functions
are listed.

Also, there's an on-screen toolbar, if you don't mind losing some more
space from your document's display. Open the Tools > Customize dialog
and click the Toolbars tab. Add a check mark to "Function Key Display"
and click the Close button. To get rid of it, go back to the same
dialog and remove the check mark.

The items on the toolbar change as you press the Alt, Shift, and Ctrl
keys in various combinations. This means you can't easily find
something unless you remember which modifier keys it needs. For that,
the help listing is better.
