Trying to plug and play a Buffalo DriveStation external USB hard
drive. Am running Win2K with SP4. When it installs, I get the
following message.
installation failed because a function driver was not specified for
this device instance.

I plugged the hd into a computer running Win XP and had no problems
with the drive. I also updated my USB drivers, but that didn't help
either.

Can anyone assist? Thank you!

Direct answer - no. But while you're waiting here, try Google web &
newsgroup searching.

I searched all day Sunday to finally solve my W2k / mother_board driver
problem. Be careful you install correct drivers - don't just shot_gun
various patches/upgrades.

I killed my W2k OS with an improper SYS driver install. Not even Safe
Mode would boot - had to restore a week old backup.

good luck,

thanks for the comment. i've been looking, doesn't seem like an
obvious solution. if anyone else out there has any suggestions,
please pass them along.

This error can drive you completely insane. In my experience
there are three possibilities:

1) The USB port is miswired - this will cause the problem, as
will a failed device port.

2) You have the wrong USB device driver loaded (such as
Win9x). Getting these completely out to reinstall the correct
one can be a real challenge, and you will have to go
deleting the relevant .sys and .inf files.

3) You never figure it out. My digital camera USB port for
example: Worked perfectly for weeks, then suddenly started giving
this error. After two days of totally fruitless debugging, I paid $15
for a 9-in-1 reader and gave up. Better solution anyway.
