We have a number of units on a customer's site, none of
which are up to date enough to have the patch for the
blaster virus.
Having been informed that dialing up and leaving an
unprotected windows box online for half an hour or so, we
dialed up... and 2 hours later nothing much had happened,
so I gave up on that idea and decided to take the direct
approach. Having made sure that the box was isolated from
the network and far enough from any others that they'd be
safe if it sneezed, I downloaded msblast.exe onto it from
a german site recommended by a friend. I ran msblast...
and it whined about a missing .dll and asked me to
reinstall it.
Sometimes I love XPe.
So, anyway, is there a way to make the virus work on this
machine? I've come to the conclusion that the behaviour of
a product around salesmen is to fail in a new and
interesting way which is going to take you weeks to figure
out, so I'd like to make sure I've tried every possible
way of getting the machine infected. IT won't let me
infect a desktop machine on purpose.
